I was just throwing that out there, there are probably other reasons and what you say also makes sense.

Your trade proposal is so bloody awful that the Jackets would hang up on you before you could finish telling them about it.

Players with NMCs and contracts that expire in 2017:
Datsyuk - probably a non-issue if he retires
Thornton
Marleau
Vanek
Sharp
Wisniewski
Iginla
Wideman
Pronger
Umberger
Fisher
Might be missing a few

Take out Sergei Bobrovsky than:
To Columbus:
6th pick
Mason Raymond
To Calgary:
3rd pick
David Clarkson(Flames use their compliance buyout on him)
It only costs the Flames money(I don't what the Flames ownership thinks though LOL). The 3 in this draft is where the money is.
"Hey, Columbus! We propose that you drop three spots in the draft for absolutely nothing in return. Sound good?"
They get cap relief and save real money from unloading David Clarkson's contract, the Blue Jackets are a small market team and bleeding money, they save $22 million in real money over the next 4 years.

Like I said, you are asking the Jackets to move down for nothing in return.
Or are you foolish enough to think that the Flames would be willing to blow a bunch of money buying out *two* players, but the Jackets wouldn't buy-out one?

The Jackets are a small market team, the owner would probably not have the stomach to buyout such a large contract but you are right the Flames may not be willing to buy out 2 players. If this is true, than Wideman is being bought out, you don't want to lose Giordano, Brodie or Hamilton.

If there were a few "LA, CHI, TOR or NYR", on the list, I would feel better about this. Screwing over ARI or CAL or SJ probably isn't a huge concern for the league.

I don't believe it will happen personally. For the reason that you are giving such a small benefit to the expansion team and absolutely punishing a small number of teams. Look at that list - there is just a small number of teams that would be exposing a different player or two.
For Calgary the biggest issue isn't that you have to protect Wideman per se and expose someone else, it's that it would make him virtually untradeable at the deadline.

Patrick Marleau and Joe Thornton are going to be protected no matter what,
Chris Pronger is not coming back, so they might get him exempt, Arizona has to protect Antoine Vermette which also sucks but they should enough room left for their good players, so they are ok. The only team I see getting screwed are the Colorado Avalanche because they have lots of good young players that need to be protected and they have to protect a 35+ Iginla.

Why do Flames need cap room less the year after next? Not sure I agree with that. Buyouts are awful - puts dead money on the cap.

Why would the Sharks protect Marleau and Thornton when they are going to be UFA's just a few days later?

I thought it was already established that NMCs would need to be protected.
Expiring contract or not, if a team used a NMC to convince a player to sign or take a discount, then they should bear the burden of it.
I wonder if it might be better to just get Wideman (or who ever) to waive the clause for the expansion draft like they would for a trade. They would be a free agent in 10 days anyway.
