I don't think that is true at all. If that was close to what was being agreed to the NHL insiders would be all over it as some NHL GMs will leak it to someone because that potentially gives an expansion team an opportunity to gut an established franchise.

I don't get it if that's true. I don't care how much owners love money, why would they screw over their own teams?

Why would it be so many forwards relative to defencemen

2 Dmen is ridiculous. Does Gio have a full NMC? Hate to lose him but you have to keep Brodie and Hamilton. Wideman buyout this summer is almost a lock as no one will trade for him if they have to retain him in a expansion draft

Gio has a NTC according to generalfanager... You have to expose him, and keep Brodie/Hamilton if we can only protect 2 and Wideman would get bought out for sure. I can't believe teams would actually agree to protecting that few.

It can't be true.
The expansion team will come out of the expansion draft with probably the best D-core in the entire league.
The team would be able to pick one of the following D-men from each team:
CGY: Giordano, Hamilton, Brodie (Wideman NMC)
ANA: Fowler, Lindholm, Vatanen (Bieksa NMC)
CHI: Keith, Seabrook, Hjalmersson
NAS: Weber, Josi, Ekholm, Ellis
NYI: Leddy, Hamonic, DeHaan (Boychuk NMC)
WPG: Trouba (plus Myers, Byfuglien and Enstrom all have NMC's, they'd be hooped)
TBL: Hedman, Stralman, Garrison, Sustr
WSH: Niskanen, Carslon, Alzner, Orpik
CLB: Jones, Murray, Johnson, Savard (Tyutin NMC)
LAK: Doughty, Muzzin, Martinez
That's just 10 teams. You could pick a top D-core just from that list alone.
That article has to be rubbish.

Wow yea that would be an amazing d core for any team. Protecting 3 d makes sense. I dont see a way they make it only 2. At least i hope not..

So just from my list here assume the bolded are protected:
Fowler - Brodie
Ekholm - Hamonic
Murray - Trouba
No freaking way the owners agree to that. That was just 10 teams, I built the D above and still left behind Gio, Hjalmersson, Vatanen, Ellis, DeHaan, Garrison, Sustr, Alzner, Orpik, Johnson, Savard and Martinez.
Also, Winnipeg would probably get pounded with some sort of penalty for not being able to comply.

I don't get it, wideman's contract ends with the 2016/2017 season and the expansion team starts 2017/2018 why would Calgary need to protect him?

if they need to protect him it will be because he will have a valid NMC at the time of the expansion draft

Has anyone listened to the interview to confirm that's what Burrows actually says?
My guess is that somewhere along the way, someone took the two scenarios that have been widely reported -- teams can either protect 7F/3D (10 total) or 8 total skaters (ie, 4F/4D or 3F/5D) -- and combined them in their mind to be 8 total, including 7F.

Expansion talk begins at 1:43:02 apparently. (edit: there is also a link part way down the page for the expansion part)
It is french so if someone is fluent and can translate it would be appreciated

Wording on NMC was curious - not that they need to be protected but that they weren't eligible to be drafted. Depending on how you interpret that it could mean that players with NMC don't need to be protected at all, perhaps in part to deal with the expiring contract issue? Helps some teams immensely but doesn't screw others as much.

Every expansion draft since 1991 has happened in the last week of June. Wideman's contract will expire at midnight June 30th, 2017. If the expansion draft is, say the 27th of June, he will still be under contract with the Flames with an NMC and need to be one of our protected players.
One thing that will be interesting is if the expansion draft is before or after the regular draft. It's scheduled for June 23-24th, 2017. The 2016-17 regular season is scheduled to end April 15th, which is 5 days later than this year's season ended.
The last possible day of the Finals this year is June 16th, five days later than that would be the 21st of June, leaving only two days between the potential end of the playoffs and the scheduled draft date and almost certainly not enough time to hold an expansion draft.
They must be planning on holding it after the draft. That seems odd to me, wouldn't the Vegas team want to have their veterans in place before they go to the draft?

That would be such bull if it was the case. Teams like Chicago, Columbus, NYR and Pittsburgh would be helped out enormously.
Chicago would have Toews, Kane, Hossa, Seabrook, Keith, Hjalmarsson and Crawford taken off the table immediately. Panarin won't be eligible, and then they could protect basically the whole rest of their roster leaving like Brandon Mashinter and Michael Rozsival exposed.
If NMC's have to be counted as protected, the Hawks already have 3 F 3 D and their G accounted for, leaving either two more skaters (Van Riemsdyk and Teravainen?) they can protect or four more forwards.
