Recent movies that got horrible reviews that you liked

I haven't seen the Matador--maybe I will after reading this thread.

Sometimes I think critics fail to evaluate a movie on its own terms--and thus fail to predict what that movie's audiences will think of it. "V for Vendetta," "The Matrix," "X-Men," etc. are all examples of this. Films generally have their own specific criteria for success, and it's not always being the next Citizen Kane.

I saw "The Island" recently and that got panned by critics but I thought it was alright, as far as mindless action movies go.

Of course Scarlett Johannsson was scampering about in a tigh track suit and that obviously doesn't hurt, so maybe that's why I liked it.

It's like the cliche older people bring up about remembering what they were doing the day JFK was shot. I remember everything I was doing the day Titanic stole 3.5 hours of my life.

Anybody else see these? Others that the critics ripped that you thought were great?

I saw both of these and I couldn't agree more. Matador was great, Pierce Brosnan's funniest performance, and Elizabethtown was another great musical postcard from Cameron Crowe...but I'm just a sucker for most of Crowe's flicks.

The Matador was great. Elizabethtown was pretty good too. A movie that I recently viewed that I thought was going to suck hard was Grandma's Boy. I haven't laughed that hard in a long time. Very surprising and a keeper IMO.

I have to agree with those that thought "V" was awesome. Very timely flick IMO. I also have to defend Titanic. The movie had a great story, great special effects, brilliant cinematography, and set the standard for blockbusters to come. And it was directed by a Canuck! I think that what makes movies so interesting is that we all view them differently and they all affect us in different ways. There is always going to be someone who does or doesn't like a particular movie.

The Matador and V for Vendetta have on average got good reviews.

I have literally watched Grandma's boy 6 times, and I don't understand why. I also enjoyed The Benchwarmers, Rob Schneider playing the cool guy with a hot wife = funny.

I've heard a lot of people say recently that they didn't like 'Titanic' but I always wondered did they like when it was first released and have just disliked it over time. Obviously this doesn't hold true with you, but I must say 'Titanic' was a superbly made movie and as someone said before perceptions differ.

I only mentioned Titanic because I wanted to parallel Poseidon with another movie with an ocean liner sinking. I didn't realize how it would take over the thread!

For the record - I loved it. I really go for the historical dramas and I thought the ship sinking was probably one of the best disaster sequences I had ever seen. The whole thing really captured my imagination.

For those who didn't like it - well I felt the same way about "Blair Witch Project". Everybody was raving about something I thought was a total piece of crap.

So I feel your pain!
