You don't pick a guy like that at 4 over clearly better prospects just because your prospect cupboard at the position is bare. The Oilers can use the rest of the draft to draft defensemen if they want.
The Oilers need help today and one of these three defensemen won't be able to play top pairing for years which is why the Oilers will trade for one or two established defensemen using Eberle, RNH, or Hall as bait. Even Oilers media is resigned to the fact that one or more of their golden boys will be finally moved this offseason.

Maybe Hall will bring back a good defenceman but I don't' give them much of a chance of a good return with the other two overpaid wunder kids. If they could get their defenceman for either of those two, they would have already made the deal.

They clearly need to start winning now while their McDavid window is open and they aren't in salary cap hell. You are talking like they are a newly rebuilding team. The current management doesn't have another ten years to turn this around. You make it sound like one of these defensemen is a stud prospect that you can't pass on which is far from the truth.

I agree. Now it's damned if you do and damned if you don't with respect to taking some time and doing it properly.
The difference between Tkachuk and Juolevi is pretty slight. I'd bet money that some teams have Juolevi higher. One of the only major differences is when they're expected to contribute.
But they won't win a god damned thing in their McDavid window if they don't get some top pairing d-men. And says here that outside of trading Hall, this pick is their best chance to do so.

Two Finnish forwards worth looking at: Borkström and Björkqvist, but you have to draft them both or it won't be as funny.

Haha, glad you remembered that.
Which poster was it that didn't get what I had done and thought that's actually what Bjorklund looked like again?

It’s worse news for Vancouver and Calgary at five and six. The likelihood of Tkachuk dropping to those slots is nearing infinitesimal. The Flames, in particular, crave a power winger. (A few teams suspect the Canucks like Dubois if the above four are gone.)

Draft Pick

The poor Canucks - drafting 5th in a top four year. Friedman's 30 thoughts do point out what has been argued here; drafting Tkachuk makes sense for the Oilers from a player usage and cap management point of view. If the Oilers offered something like RNH to the Canucks for Tanev they would have a respectable top 4. Not anywhere good as the Flames but not the tire-fire it's been since Pronger left.

Canucks would never trade Tanev, a legit shutdown top pairing guy, for a soft, 50 point 2nd line center. Not even Benning is that dumb.

Dubois is a great consolation prize at 5. Nylander/Jost/Brown/Dman not so much at 6

Draft Pick

Jim Benning is that dumb. RNH is a local boy, the scouting staff which still remains was very high on him, and don't let Oiler hate cloud your thinking - RNH has the skill to be a decent lower-tier #1 centre. Those are very valuable.

What if there was a way to get RNH and flip him to CBJ for #3?

I would think the same of RNH if he was the same player on any other team. He's just not a difference maker, and he's certainly not worth a top pairing defenceman. I bet the Canucks would do 5 OA for him but losing Tanev would be devastating for them, he's easily their best defenseman and would solve a lot of Edmonton's problems. No way Vancouver helps them out like that. It would also push Horvat to the third line or to the wing for the next two years at least. Lots of reasons for the Canucks to balk at that.

I'm just thinking out loud here, but people are speculating that the Leafs would want to get the Marner-Tkachuk-Dvorak line back together in the pros, but wouldn't it be more doable for the Coyotes to get at least Dvorak-Tkachuk back together? Seems like them trading up to #4 (Oilers going back to #7, getting the D-man they want) would be kinda doable.

Yeah that's about right. ARZ has the assets to grab Tkachuk. Either way the draft goes I think Dubois and Tkachuk go 4-5. The teams they go to TBA. I just don't see either in a Flames jersey come draft day.

Well, 1st overall for the 6th, so that the Leafs can have both Nylanders. But it has to happen now to make sense.

I'd love to know how those interviews with guys who will clearly be gone before the interviewing teams pick go.
"Hi, Auston."
"Uh, hey. What do you want to know?"
"Oh, you know. Hockey stuff, I guess."
