You have a much larger FOV. If you are backing out of a garage, you have a narrow tunnel. If you are backing in, you can see all around. Unless you are driving a panel van with no windows, you shouldn't be just using your mirrors anyway. Turn your body and look out the back window. You should see almost everything.

I really don't like or use backup cameras. I find that I can get a better sense of my surroundings using the traditional methods. Some newer vehicles might be better for rearview cameras because I hear the term "fish eye" lenses being used now but I don't think that I have experienced one of those.

Using a mall parking lot as an example, there is less chance of a pedestrian walking through the middle of the spot you are backing into, than somebody walking down the roadway that you are backing into when backing out. So in theory it makes sense.

However if we are advocating the the strugglers practice backing into parking spot, can we please ask them to learn to merge before we have them work on backing into spots?

Another reason I like to back in is that in the winter if it snows lots you can get a good straight run and don't have to worry about getting stuck backing out. Might be more of an issue at my place because I'm on a hill, but I do find it much easier in the winter.

I know it was an automatic fail when I did my driver's test if you just tried to use your mirrors and physically never turned and looked back.

Sometimes it just doesn't matter, some kids can be very quick and bolt away even if your holding their hand. This happened to me in a mall once during christmas, couldn't find him for 5 minutes.

Unless you strap your kids to your body they will find a way.

SUVs and trucks make it really hard to see low things like short kids when you are backing up. It would have almost surely helped in this case. They do give a pretty wide angle, and having the audible warnings work pretty great at warning you if you are going to hit anything. I have to say it is about 95% safer for backing up larger vehicles vs no camera.
