2016 property tax increases
A news story on Global showed some people are facing increases of 20% (or more).
http://globalnews.ca/news/2733701/ou...ry-homeowners/
Have you received your notice in the mail yet? I haven't opened mine yet but am not looking forward to it.

I just went on the TIPP program in May, and now my monthly payment is going up about 30%.
This is after I went through all the BS of getting on the program.

My condo is up about $10 per month. Reasonable, all things considered. My titled parking stall, however, went up 20%.... to $6.

Ours went up by just over $200. Not the end of the world but under the greatest mayor in the history of man the continual hiking of taxes is getting tiresome. I always assumed since he was such a special mayor he could at least help hatch some creative ways to better use the existing tax base rather than continually ask for more. Any dummy can simply raise taxes to solve problems.

Heather Morris is holding down three part-time jobs to make ends meet, and now her property taxes have risen by almost $100 per month.
She owns a home in Renfrew appraised at $700,000 for 2016.
Her taxes are going up from $3,700 to $4,800 a year. Morris says it’s a hardship for her to pay the extra amount.
“I can’t handle it – it’s soon going to be in a position (where either) I buy …a loaf of bread or I pay my taxes and taxes are not negotiable,” Morris said.

Omg! Guys maybe we should start a Kickstarter to help this poor woman. She's not gonna be able to eat or feed her kids. Lol. Stupid global news. As if anyone feels sorry for someone in a $700k home.

I was thinking the same, surprised that Global chose thsi example over others to try and highlight the issue.

You can thank your provincial ndp for a good chunk of this one...and the raises still to come.

Well unlike the spineless Albertans that voted NDP but don't admit it I can at least say I never asked for this.

It depends. It doesn't matter what your home is worth- you don't get that money unless you sell. Did she scrape together and buy the place for $150K in 2004? Just because her property value has gone up, does that mean she now has to sell?

If she can't afford to live there, then yes.

I tried looking for my 2015 property tax assessment and couldnt find it. Is there a resource online where you can compare 2016 property taxes to 2015?

Well I didn't vote at all but I'm glad our taxes are going up. They are way too low compared to virtually anywhere else in the country. Our social services are severely lacking. We need the extra money.

If only more money equaled better services you'd be on to something.

4.8% increase for me. Seems about what they were telling us to expect.

I beleive if you were the owner in the previous year you can see that information if you log in to the TIPPS website.
Edit: I think I'm actually thinking of assessed value and that would not necessarily give you your annual property tax amount

That's pretty cold. Were you also rooting against the grandmother in "Happy Gilmore?"
Nobody should be forced out of their home simply due to external market conditions that they are not a part of. Especially not when such an increase takes a ~30% spike in one year; once again not due to anything the person is a part of.

You can thank former mayors who didn't raise property taxes for years, now Nenshi's crew needs to raise them just to get back to status quo.

I was just referring to the 10%+ increase in the provincial take this year which directly caused a big part of the property tax increase. I'm ok with Nenshi's crew although I find the "well we asked you what you wanted and you didn't realize it all costs money" pandering to be highly annoying.
