The cost of a facade isn't going to make or break a project like that.

The National Music Centre had just as much work rebuilding the King Eddy brick by brick.

No it isn't. The York hotel was 4 times the size of the Eddy.

Only in pics. It works in person.

I agree though, it's not my favorite, it's just the most popular. My favorite is heading west from the NE part of Memorial drive. Downtown looks freaking amazing from both the East and West.

(Old view. looks better from specific spots and with Brookfield)

Either way, the cost of the rebuilding the bricks isn't a huge amount different that from what a "regular" facade would cost, and certainly wouldn't make or break a project.

(For some reason, I was thinking the York was only 4 stories, and that why I thought they were roughly the same size, which obviously was wrong)

While it's true that the cost to rebuild the facade of the York has a negligible impact on the economics of the Bow South Block (which should go ahead eventually), the NMC isn't the best example as it's an institutional project being built at twice the cost of any comparable office project in the city.

Also true. And I think twice is a very conservative estimate. That building is not inexpensive. And from what I've heard, I suspect that they are quite a bit over budget.

I thought that idea ended up being scrapped, and they used new bricks. Too many of the old bricks were in bad shape, IIRC.

Well, the original design had the Bow elevated on the sides and depressed in the middle... it looked like a stargate or something - and not whatsoever in the cool, sci-fi way. I'm not a fan of the Bow either, really, but it could have been worse IMO.

Got some awesome pics from my dad from the top of Brookfield.

These are from the 59th floor and he said there's one floor left. I'll let someone more knowledgeable than myself confirm that.

spoiler for size...

Spoiler!

Why they went with the grey, concrete-looking facade instead of what's in this picture, I'll never know (cost, obviously) - it totally ruins the look.

Uh what? They went with high quality terra-cotta (just like they said they would) that changes color in a pretty neat way depending the light. Sometimes it looks grey and sometimes it looks golden. I think it's pretty awesome.

They did some of the building in terra-cotta, but not all. Can you not see the grey facade in your own (first) picture?

Compare that to the picture I quoted.

Edit: I have added the picture for reference.

Your picture cuts off part of the grey, but it is still clearly visible and as can be seen, it completely loses the intended effect.

Everything on that picture is either that same tile, or not yet complete, but will be tile.

Here is a full picture from the south. The terra-cotta has been replaced with the grey that looks like concrete (though I think it is actually tile) on about half of the entire southern facade. Not only does it lose the shimmer effect, but they also replaced several angular lines from the design, with straight up-and-down tiling.

The result is that it looks like a big square box.

NSFW!

I thought so too at first, but no, pretty sure that is the facade, as is.
