No, the North America Under 23's are a team in the tournament. They compete against all the other teams. The NHL decided to do this instead of having other crappy European teams like Germany, etc involved.

Ok wow I had no idea this was the case. That's so weird but now that I know that ill definitely be cheering for team North America simply because of Gaudreau and Monahan.

They are in different groups, so good news..you can still cheer for both unless they end up playing each other after the round robin.

Group A
Canada
USA
Czechia
Europe

Group B
Russia
Sweden
Finland
North America (U23's)

Its sad that this used to be such a great tournament flushed down the toilet and now trying to reboot.

Cheering for NA. That NA/Russia game might finish 10-9

Eichel, Gaudreau, and Monahan on Team NA. Know who I'm cheering for!

Why do you have to cheer for a specific team?
Why not cheer for some exciting hockey and a good tournament in September?
No need to cheer for or against anyone all the time.

Any time Canada is in a tournament, ill cheer for them.

Of course, exciting hockey and a good tournament would be a bonus.

I think the Team Snub is a good idea. If they do that I will cheer for them.

So if it went down to a shoot out, or an OT breakaway and Monahan or Johnny had the game on their stick vs Canada, you would rather Holtby saves it?

For me, it's generally hard to get pumped for international hockey. It is just not the same as international soccer. I cheer the heck out of the Women's NT and U20 soccer teams.

That being said, I'd get pretty darn excited if Johnny or Mony were lighting it up against a traditional power team, including vs Canada.

Still cheering for Canada and I would wager most Canadians will, in spite of the poll results. Team Europe and North America are gimmicky, but why not. The young guns will be the most interesting story out there. Still makes it more interesting than Team Swiss or Slovakia or whatever.

I'll cheer for both Canada and team North America. And if they meet in the medal round, I'll cheer for NA because they'll almost certainly be the underdog.

I'm cheering for Team Canada of course, but the Team NA I find the most interesting. Watching Gaudreau play on McDavid's wing is going to be pretty exciting and I think they will tear the tournament up.

Team Europe because I want to hear the Champions League anthem after they win games.

Those ads for the world cup on TV are awful.

"Who owns hockey?" Rogers Sportsnet.

I will be cheering for no team. This tournament is a stupid idea and I'm not watching. The fact that this is replacing NHL players at the 2018 Olympics is a joke.

I think the U23 team would bother people a whole lot less if players weren't forced into it.

Johnny and Eichel should be on team USA. So should Seth Jones. There are other U23 players in the NHL who could make this team competitive.

If you're good enough to play for the National team, you should get to play for them. The US losing two great players for no reason rubs everyone the wrong way.

Cheering for none of the above. It's not like it was back in the 70's and early 80's where fans got some first glimpses of European star players. This is nothing more than a series of allstar games.
