The world cup should be, a world cup, nation vs nation.

It's a pathetic format. I'm going for Europe because Antarctica isn't there yet.

How hard did players go at the last World Cup? Or the 1996 one? Or any of the Canada Cups?

I am cheering for no one because I think the concept is stupid and if any of our Flames are hurt we should class action the NHL and Sportsnet!

Are they going to settle ties with 3 on 3 OT or penalty shootouts?

Will they allow ties in the round robin?

Ties go to McDavid.

I thought this was common knowledge.

I seem to recall the 2004 World Cup being pretty fantastic.

Player compete was such an issue that it was never actually discussed by anyone.

I admit that the two gimmicky teams are annoying, and I'd have preferred they stuck to the traditional six teams.

However, some of the best hockey I've watched in my life was the the Canada/World Cup, so I'm not as dismissive of the tournament as the people who've only ever watched Olympics are. And personally, I'm glad there won't be 6 crap teams in the tournament and a bunch of exhibition-quality games at the outset. I have no doubt that the quality of play, from the opening whistle of the first game, will be better than the Olympics.

I think this question deserves to be split into two more polls.

My votes:

Team North America: This Land Is Your Land (Half USA Version/Half CAN Version) (Edit: vote changed to "Whoomp There it is".)

Team Europe: The Final Countdown

Canada/World Cup didn't have gimmick teams IIRC. Really thou, the Canada Cup was different... that was played before professionals could compete in the Olympics so it was the only venue to see the best national team that you could. Additional it was also more emotional charged by the Cold War.

I get what you're saying... for my money the 87 Canada Cup was the greatest hockey ever played. But this isn't that.

As for anthems... Ode to Joy is the EU anthem so I imagine they use that. As for Team North America... I dunno... "X Gon Giv it to Ya" for the under 23's?

So "I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston (Bodyguard Soundtrack)? Alternatively "Whoomp! (There It Is)"

I officially change my NA Anthem vote to "whoomp there it is".

"And now, please rise, remove your hats, and join us in the playing of the team NA national anthem...'Whoomp! There it is.'"

(Sticking with my original Team Europe pick.)

I don't even understand this tournament any more. Aren't the U23's only playing against other U23's or are they playing against the other teams listed in the poll?
