2 Canadian Soldiers Killed
Our soldiers seem to be dying at an alarming rate.
R.I.P.
Total CDN Deaths: 39

PBS show Frontline, about the Taliban in Afganistan, is on at 10pm (MST, Shaw 14) if anyone is interested in learning a little more about who we're fighting over there.

You're seriously not comparing death tolls in this war to previous conflicts, are you? In WWI, it was acceptable to lose 1000 lives to advance 100 yards.
Times have changed.
And yes, by modern standards, our soldiers are being killed at an alarming rate in Afghanistan.

You know we have no chance to win? How do you think all those people that want us there, have new freedoms, women who can walk in the street, would feel about you saying. Hey...since it is a fight we can't win then screw you guys...you're on your own.
That fact alone is the reason I think we should be there, not to mention that, like a lot of Muslims claim, they are not all extremists, so why not stay and fight for the good of man kind?

Because it's an uphill battle that we have no chance of winning under the current conditions. The political culture and will isn't going to allow for a victory in afghanistan, so why should canadians be sacrificing their lives, when the government they are trying to protect is not particularly different than the one that was displaced?
How do you think all the families and friends of the canadian troops lost and injured feel about you saying it's worth it even if we can't win and impact significant change?

Personally, I have no idea what our chances of winning are. The reason for that is I have no idea what "winning" looks like. What are our exit criteria? How will we know when the war is over? Will it be a sudden or staged withdrawal? Are we seeking military or political objectives? What are the benchmarks?
I'm not saying I oppose the war--at the time the invasion took place, going into Afghanistan was the only response to the outrage of 9/11 that made any sense. On the other hand, I am saying that it seems like more planning goes into starting wars than ending them--and this seems like a case where we need to at least start thinking about what those exit strategies are.

We exit when the Afghani government is stable enough to take care of it's own internal and external security. Just like Iraq.
