So I've been doing some reading about backstory which has made it impossible for me to post in the tv show thread about some of my theories, but here goes:
Theory 1)
The human that had the dragon glass plunged into his heart is Bran the Builder. When the words are 'Winter is coming' they might actually be the embodiment of Winter, a Stark.
Theory 2)
The human that had the dragon glass plunged into his heart is one of the original Lord Commanders of the Night's Watch.
This show/book is obviously about the great man theory of history and the mythical/spiritual power of highborn and kings blood.
Who better to convert to your defense than the Leader of your enemies?
Someone smack the #### out of these theories for me please.

Both of these theories would imply the nights watch existed before the white walkers, which most of us think they were formed to protect against, no?
The first theory implies that Bran the builder built the wall before the white walkers existed, or as a white walker.
I listened to the first two books on tape, but had to go back to the wiki timeline.
The nights watch and the wall are built AFTER the first run-in with 'the others', when the 'the others' are defeated by the first men and the children of the forest. Then apparently Bran the Builder sets about building the wall and Winterfell.
I'm hypothesizing that after building the wall and winterfell when the Andals came to westeros, Bran the Builder was taken by the Children of the Forest and turned into the leader of the white walkers because he was Bran the Builder, in the mythos of Game of Thrones, he's close to a godly man. For the Tolkien nerds out there he's like the Elendil of his house.
Who better to recruit to your defense than that guy?

I am convinced that Bran himself is Bran the Builder and he travels back in time to warg his ancestor Bran tell them to build the wall. He is named after himself!

This almost seems too easy.
Also, if he can be Bran the Builder, maybe Bran is actually the Lord of Light?
I've read DWD at least twice, maybe 3 times, and I legitimately have no memory of this. I'm going to have to re-read when if WoW ever comes out.
It was Jaime's last chapter, and all we see of Brienne in ADWD
If you remember her last chapter in AFFC, Lady Stoneheart gives her a choice. Go kill Jaime or be hanged. "Sword or noose" I believe. While her and Pod are hanging, she yells "a word" but it is left ambiguous what she yelled.
So when she finds Jaime in ADWD, her face has been partially eaten off by Biter, and she's been partially hanged. So she looks awful, and she presumably lies to him to lure him back to LSH.

I know theories like this are all the rage on places like reddit but honestly I would be so disappointed if Martin turned Bran's whole storyline into some hilariously bad Terminator Genesys type time-travel BS story.
It was good for the Hodor storyline but that's where it should end.

Yeah - with GRRM's procrastination, I feel like some deus ex machina-ing might happen for a lot of the riddles, which would suck.
...And Bran was a reborn God, who only needed to remember he was all powerful and... end.

The thing is, Martin is quite candid that he doesn't plot out his books beforehand, instead letting the story go wherever his muse leads him. If you look at the original proposal summary he sent to his agent, it was out the window by a third of the way through the first book. He's basically making it up as he goes along. So I wouldn't hold my breath that he'll craft satisfactory answers to the dozens of mysteries he has thrown up.

I suppose it's more a question of whether he feels the need to provide answers and an ending: I'd be fine without, but if he feels he needs to resolve a bunch of stuff in a short period, it could be unsatisfying.
To be fair the whole "he doesn't outline thing" is not meant to say he just writes randomly. Martin has repeatedly said, and I'm pretty sure the leaked summary even explicitly explains, that just because he doesn't use an outline, it doesn't mean that he doesn't have the major beats of the story in his head or destinations for the characters in mind.
He just doesn't like having the road to get them there mapped out exactly with every single major incident already planned.
Martin has always been clear that he doesn't and won't write conveniently to appease an audience. Characters are never all evil nor all good. The good ones can die as easily as the bad ones. Just because you are a key character in the story does not mean you will survive, and not all storylines will come to a conclusion wrapped up with a bow.
As far as the divergences from his story goes, he has said the show and his books will align at key points but how they get to those moments will be different.
So I see the show and the books as being almost separate things. And just because a character dies on the show doesn't mean that they will die in the books (or vice versa). They will wrap up with the same result, but who is still standing we won't know until both have finished.

Hasn't Martin outright denied that Benjen is Coldhands? He sure looked like Coldhands in tonight's episode. Not to mention his dragonglass explanation and how the Children of the Forest saved him makes sense with what we've seen so far.

I wonder if maybe he's just been misleading his editor and book collaborators all along?
I think it's best to mark potential spoilers, whether sourced from the show or from preview chapters. Unless this series now demands three threads: Books only, TV show only, and one for both? I don't know.

Yep, that was a note from his book editor he replied to. Which makes me wonder if either he's been coy about it in the past and always planned it to go the way it did in the show, or if the show has truly deviated from where he was going with that character.

I think with simply to many characters in the books, some will show up, have a huge back story and leave once their purpose is served.
Its better then showing up with no back story!
also, in the books Benjay may simply be dead and they are just not introducing Coldhands.

So they are doing the Jaime in the Riverlands storyline and they specifically mentioned the BWB. I think we're definitely getting Lady Stoneheart this season.

Randyl Tarly was perfect. I can't wait to see more of that character.
Glad they are using the Riverlands Siege story. Jaime should learn some diplomacy from this encounter.
I'm actually thinking that Lady Stoneheart may happen. That is going to make for some very, very interesting show-only reactions.
When the description of the show said "an old foe returns", I was thinking it may have been the Hound. I'm glad it wasn't, because it gives me some hope that some of the crazy storylines from the books will make their way into the show.
I'm guessing season 6 ends with the reveal of Stoneheart.
