Short-term thinking.
They focused on ratings for a couple of games rather than the longer term of getting new fans excited about the game and the team, fans that might watch some games next season and further into the future.

A lot of thise people showing up for the outdoor party may be nee fans or know little about the game but are excited about the event. Tell them to go elsewhere and they likely wont watch the game now or next year.
