Red Wings acquire prospect Dylan Sadowy from San Jose
Minor trade:
Detroit Red Wings @DetroitRedWings
UPDATE: The #RedWings have acquired prospect Dylan Sadowy from San Jose for a third-round draft pick in 2017.
Looks like the Red Wings picked up a good one. Sadowy would have gone back to the 2016 draft if not signed before June 1st.
Matthew Sekeres @mattsekeres
Sadowy could have been a first-rounder if he re-entered the draft. Sneaky good move by Detroit.
Corey Pronman @coreypronman
Sadowy was my #5 prospect for San Jose last summer

Shadowy trade for Sadowy.

Agreed. Guys like this typically go later in the draft or not at all even. Without knowing the player at all he has good numbers , but nothing that jumps out that I would say he's worth taking in the first round. Trying to remember a player that re-entered the draft and actually went higher the second time around. Can't be long list.

Yeah - the post draft year stats are good but not 1st rounder good.
Seems like a guy who is likely a late 2nd or 3rd rounder if he re-enters.
Detroit likely payed a fair price.
It's Detroit though - so the guy will probably turn into an all-star.

Stoll and Lombardi come to mind.
Stoll went from 46th in 2000 to 36th in 2001.
Lombardi went from 215th in 2000 to 90th in 2001.

Yeah those were the ones that came to mind to me. I wanna say there was someone recently, but don't feel like looking it up. Needless to say it just doesn't happen often. No idea who that sekeres guy is, but I'd say he's off base.

Are those years right? Don't you re enter the draft 2 years later, not 1?

If so good of a prospect, why did sharks trade him?

probably a Tom Erixon situation where the player doesn't want to sign with you and you trade him instead of losing him for nothing.
EDIT: why do I even try ...

Looks like someone wrote an analytics analysis of why Sadowy should go in the 1st round

Yeah years were wrong. I meant to link the article that I poached the ranks from (and didn't fact check the draft years). But as Flamesrule points out, it really doesn't seem to happen that often. But when a player is good - a player is good.

For sure, both players were in the minority, as PPP’s study found that only one in three re-drafts went higher the second time around. That doesn’t include numerous theoretically-eligible players who got ignored completely as 20-year-olds. The whispers of such players generally being blackballed by the league establishment are supported by more than innuendo, let’s put it that way.

Seems weird a player wouldn't sign with a team that's going to the finals, with an aging core no less.
