There's seriously people comfortable paying him more than $2mil/year? Yikes. If Colborne asked for $3.6mil/year I would hope Treliving would laugh and let him walk.
I don't hate Colborne, but I think it's a bad idea to pay bottom 6 players much more than $2mil/year.

Is he a bottom 6 player? He scored at a second line rate this year, and he played over 15 minutes a game. He's closer to a top 6 than a bottom 6.

That says more about the Flames than of Colborne

Wow so if an arbitrator awards him just under $3.9MM, the Flames have to accept it?
I like him more than most people round here, but he's not worth that much. David Jones 2.0.

if he wants anything more than 2.5 then I think you look to deal him. I like him and think he does well with Backlund and Frolik but it hast to be reasonable, he is a decent trade chip though.

I think the Flames will trade his rights to avoid a potential unfavorable arbitration ruling if they can't get him signed before July 1. Can't take the risk he gets $3m-$3.9m with the team's cap situation.
That being said, Hoffman only got $2m in arbitration after a 27 goal 48 point season so that bodes well as he is a good comparable. However I still don't think the Flames will risk it. If he doesn't play ball I think he gets traded.

was he getting more ice time in march - or did he change his stick or get new skates or something.
I like joe, but not at something close to $4.0m/year. stuns me that guys like him could make that kind of money. although I will acknowledge that there are only about a 100 guys in the world at his skill level for this sport

I think that at this point it needs to be a 1 year deal. Ideally it will be less than $2.5M. At this point I see a lot more risk than reward in any long term commitment to Joe. A lot of his performance will depend on the new head coach, and his ability to consistently produce.
If we sign Joe to 3 year $2.5M-$3M contract there are three scenarios:
- He returns to the same level of play he showed at the beginning of last season, in that case he is $1-1.5M overpaid.
- He produces at the same rate he did over the last 2 seasons(14G, 36P in 69GP per season), in which case it is a fair contract.
- He keeps producing like he did at the end of the season (9G, 20P in the last 20GP). In that case he would be a bargain and save us about $3M in cap space.
Unfortunately, I see one of the first two scenarios a lot more likely than the latter.

Got put on Backlund and Frolik's line + had (IIRC) a 25% shooting percentage spike. AKA he got put with the two guys on the team that are best at pushing play into the offensive zone then had a run of good puck luck.

Colborne has one of the stupidest most non-sensical applications of advanced stats in his favour with his production late this year. You know how everyone thought Crosby was playing ridiculous hockey from the all-star break onwards? Colborne was matching Crosby's rate (even-strength points/60) of production from feb 1 through the end of the season. JoCo was producing like a legitimate top 10 player for 30 games, and his agent knows that. I could see JoCo signing a 1 year bridge, hoping to play more like he did at the end of the year all season. He'd get a monster contract if he even fell off a bit.
I like JoCo a lot, and I feel there is significant risk with his contract, but I think he can be a long-term part of the Flames.
If Brad were to sign him to a 6-year, 2/yr deal, I don't know if it would necessarily be a bad thing.

Colborne saw production increase for the same reason Bouma did the year before: Backlund

6 years seems like way too long. Not sure why Colborne would agree to that. I do think he will be in the $2mil range, give or take.
An just no, to "JoCo".

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

I have an Oiler friend who said he'd do a Colborne for Yakupov deal. I could live with that.

Until we find some better RWers there's a good chance Colborne will be getting top-6 minutes this season.
To be honest I would like to see him on the top line unless we sign or trade for a guy like Okposo. He has good hands, is big enough to leverage for position in front of the net & on the boards & has shown chemisty with Monahan in the past.
Sign him long term at $2m then turn him into a top 6 winger. Abbracadabra

Yakupov is getting paid $2.5 millions, I'd rather pay that to Joe Colborne
