He was an amazing player and 3rd in scoring behind Gretzky and Dionne is quite a feat. And the 131 points is garish for sure. But greatest Flames season of all time? I'm not sold.
He was not in the conversation for the Hart per my recollection. I would put:
Iginla's Art Ross, Richard and near Hart trophy
Lanny's 66 goals (behind only Gretzky)
Macinnis' 100+ point season, 2nd in Norris
all ahead of this one.

I was not a big fan. However great the point total, most people felt with a better work ethic he could have scored even more. This team was better after he left.

The first time I saw the Flames in person as a kid, Nilsson hung up 4 against Minnesota at the Corral. He was a massive talent.

I'd put MacInnis' season above this one, except Nilsson's scoring was so far beyond any other Flame, and you had to have been there to really appreciate how amazingly good he was that season. He, Dionne and Bossy might have got a few Hart trophy votes, but this was when Gretzky was nearly at his peak.
People shouldn't confuse the Nilsson of that season with the Nilsson of later years, when his inconsistency and apparent lack of commitment had him in Badger Bob's doghouse.

It ticks me off that it took Mark Messier to get Kent Nilsson to get serious about his game. There is so much wrong with Nilsson winning a Cup with Edmonton.

Pretty sure that was just a coincidence. He played maybe 30 games total for the Oilers that year and left the NHL after.

Story goes that Messier took Nilsson aside and threatened to kick his arse if he didn't perform in the playoffs. It's no coinicdence that he had 19 points in 21 playoff games.

Considering he was a PPG player his entire career I'd say it was a coincidence. Think you're reading too much into Messier's role in those 30 or so games as an Oiler. He joined a stacked team and won.

There is likely some merit to the story. We are talking about the magic man here. Who's best magical act was to disappear in the playoffs.

Career 75 points in 78 playoff games - not far off a point/game, so the playoff performance for Edmonton was about average. I believe there's some truth to the story - but whether Messier's rumoured threats would a big motivator for Nilsson is debatable. He marched to his own drummer.

Remember, though, Nilsson was **never** a committed player. Even that season he took nights off all the time -- then he'd go out and have a 4 or 5 point night. He was probably the most gifted floater in the history of the NHL.

Well, we each obviously saw a different Nilsson that season. With 131 points, he couldn't have taken many games off, and I don't recall people being concerned about this in that season. With highly skilled players, the stick handling magic doesn't work every day.
