For me Day For Night is where they became, dare I say, post apex. At least in terms of song quality and feel. I just think everything up to and including Fully Completely, and to some degree Day for Night, was better musically and more "rocking". After that was the transition to the more poetic sing songy phase. The lyrics were better, but I don't think the music was. Then again, maybe I'm just that grumpy old man clamoring for the old stuff because "kids these days".
You are sort of being a grumpy old man, but not quite. I've noticed that with almost any band whom you fall in love with their early stuff you'll grow less fond of their newer material.
I would agree that Day for Night is a bit of a drop off in terms of my favorite Hip music. Fully Completely and Day for Night are my two favorite. Trouble at The Henhouse just couldn't follow up to those two albums, but I really thought Phantom Power was great too, it is my 3rd fav. After that is where I feel that they changed a lot more for my tastes, but I don't think they've put out an album that I don't like. I just have my favorites that I turn to more than others. We Are The Same is my least favorite, but I still enjoy it.
Out of all the bands I like, the Tragically Hip is the one band that I listen to the most, and the one band that I enjoy nearly every single one of their songs on all of their albums. I skip their songs the least out of any band.

This for me is part of what makes this band unique. They fell right between two generations. 1 foot on the classic rock side, 1 foot on the alternative side. The Hip are the band that all Canadian rock fans could seemingly agree on.

So the Hip have a special place in my heart - well, just one song actually. It's one of those things where you can take a song and really personalize it. I think the Hip, even though I'm far from a super fan, are great at providing songs that you can relate to yourself or your situation.
When I was younger, I lived in Okotoks, I think longtime people on here know that, and so 15 years ago it felt much farther away than it does now. Anyway, started college in 2003 and drove into town every day for class. It was then when I was finding myself so to speak, and one of my friends told me that Bobcaygeon was secretly about a gay cop (more as an urban legend, pre-Youtube or being able to verify it online), so in my mind I it made that - figuring it probably wasn't true, but it still took that to heart: living out in the country, having to travel just to be near someone and/or where I could actually be myself.
Whether it was true or not didn't matter to me, because in my mind, that was the song was to me. I'd actually choke up a bit every single time it came on it because that's what I created in my mind. It was super personal.
Fast-forward to a few years ago - can't remember where, but I saw a post online where Gord confirmed it was true, like this:
And the song meant that much more to me.

Way back in the day when Mr. Suave and I were first dating, we went to see The Hip at the Dome. "How many times have you seen The Hip?" he asked me. "Oh, I dunno," I said. "Maybe 3 or 4 times. I figure it's our patriot duty to see them whenever we can."

I know the Hip have always loved western Canada and have specifically mentioned the support they get here (being interviewed in Toronto, so not just pandering).
But it does seem a little odd that they're playing the **** out of western Canada and Ontario and literally not setting foot east of that.
Those are big gaps between some of the dates, particularly Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary. I wonder if they'll have a second night for a few of them.

For awhile I was like the above poster...while I still loved the music the magic seemed to not be there as often after Day for Night. That said, Now For Plan A kicked my ass for some reason. For me it's right up there with Fully Completely.

Yes, the word is magic. I've enjoyed all the albums but some just don't have the magic that makes the earlier albums so great. We Are The Same, to me, was just not magical. So I didn't buy Now For Plan A until about 3 weeks ago. After I listened to it a couple of times I was wondering why I didn't buy it on release day. I didn't discover The Hip until a few months after Day for Night was released, but after that I bought all of the Hip's albums on release day except for Now for Plan A, which turned out to be one of the better releases over the past 3 or 4 albums. I won't make that mistake again, sadly, I only have one chance to get it right.
