Default Kevan Miller signs a 4 year deal, $10m contract with the Bruins

Kinda slipped under the radar yesterday, this signing is creating a bit of a stir out East, especially in Boston where the reaction has been....interesting to say the least. The Bruins have signed bottom pairing guy Kevan Miller to a 4 year deal with a $2.5m cap hit.

If anyone is on twitter, check out Pete Blackburn's(you might recognise him as one of the GIF creators) reaction to the signing. Needless to say he wasn't pleased. Nor were a lot of Boston fans(check out the tweets in reply to the Miller signing announcement).

For anyone unsure why this has created so much controversy, basically the Bruins have got an incredibly meh and declining defensive core locked up for the next 2 years. Essentially they have their bottom 2 defensive pairings(Chara, Seidenburg, McQuaid, Miller) signed up to the tune of $16.15m. And thats before Torey Krug gets somewhere in the region of $5m as an RFA as well.

Don Sweeney strikes again.

The salary isn't terrible for a bottom pairing guy but the term is worrisome as I don't know if you ever want to consider locking in bottom pairing guys for 4 years as ideally you like to leave a spot open for a defensemen graduating from your system. At 28 years old Miller is what he is so $5 million over two years would have been the max you would want to commit to a guy like this.

I can't really comment on the contract itself (although it does seem excess) but I just find situations like this so interesting. The guy was 25 years old and making roughly $60,000 in the AHL, before that he was undrafted. He didn't really establish himself as an NHL player until 27, and even then it was iffy. Now his $10,000,000.00 contract is going to kick in just before his 29th birthday.

This is a bad deal. You can get the same value for much, much less money. You also do not have to commit to term. The term creates significant downside. There is basically no upside. He is 28 - he is not going to be better at any point during this deal.

The Bruins are a badly run organization.

Quite a few years for a serviceable (but most definitely replaceable) defenseman.

Maybe Treliving should call Sweeney and get involved in another Hamilton like trade

Ha, he's cheaper than Engelland and a decent, tough defender. Don't love it, but maybe it's expansion bait?

Miller looked pretty good to me last year. Does he really play bottom pairing minutes? I saw his number out there a lot.

$2.5 doesn't seem unreasonable.

Money is right, term is a bit long. Got to hand it to his agent for getting a 4 year deal.

I think both the term and money are unreasonable when similar replacement level players can be found on waivers at the beginning of every NHL season.

If you want to build a successful team in the NHL, you can't be overpaying for depth, bottom line players.

You'll get similar performance from guys on 1-year, $1 million contracts.

Who?

Pretty long term for pretty much a nobody. Guy probably isn't even in the NHL on teams with decent depth.

I actually thought the player was decent this year. Maybe nto worthy of this contract, but decent.

You can find a better D man in free agency every year for under a million

Also didn't they give up Dougie because they couldn't close the gap on 500k?

The Bruins seem to have a problem with giving RFAs big raises. Miller is a UFA. They probably think he "paid his dues" or some other old school mindset.

I still have hope that Don Sweeney might give us Rask. There's always hope with him.

Not saying he's the worst GM, but he definetely makes "interesting" decisions.
