well turkey's got a bit of a past with pope-hatred, sadly.

this isn't so much a muslim thing i suspect as the usual greece-turkey sideshow.

interesting to note that greece, syria, and iran signed a co-defense pact in 1996 to counteract israel and turkey warming up to each other, though as far as i'm concerned the crescendo of that saber-rattling was in 1999 when greek and turkish fighter planes were trading shots and turkey had that madman ecivit as p.m.

Agreed. The level of hate those two countries have for each other is staggering. When I was in Greece people still referred to Istanbul as Constantinople....

what's real bizarre is how close these cultures were, not so long ago.

if not for the excesses of greek and italian troops right after WWI they might still be united to some extent, greeks may have stayed with the head of the orthodox church remaining in istanbul.

without some specific massacres the turks would have stayed oppressed by foreigners on their soil, they were a totally broken nation.

c'est la vie, the greeks made their bed. or i should say ONE GENERAL made the bed for all greeks in anatolia.

terror breeds terror, terror breeds fanaticism, and as the western world continues to forget, terror breeds heroes and patriots.

I don't think it was the usual greece-turkey sideshow and maybe my initial post wasn't clear enough. The plane left from Italy on its way to Turkey just happened to be in Greek airspace at the time the hijacking took place...

you are correct sir.

http://www.thenewanatolian.com/tna-15743.html

A Turkish Airlines plane carrying more than 100 passengers from Tirana, Albania, to Istanbul, was hijacked Tuesday and landed at Italy's Brindisi airport, company spokesman Ali Genc said.
The plane was hijacked in Greek airspace, Genc said.
Turkish television channel NTV, quoting unnamed security officials, reported that the plane was hijacked by two Turks to protest Pope Benedict XVI's planned visit to Turkey next month.

what's interesting here is that as far as i know the last pope was the first to visit some orthodox countries since the fourth crusade, but i don't think turkey wasn't one of them. has the pope visited turkey recently? i cannot recall.

Story seems to be changing a bit

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/5403976.stm

The hijackers were reported to have been protesting against the Pope's planned visit to Turkey in November.
However, confirming the surrender, Brindisi Police Chief Salvatore De Paolis told Reuters that the two men wanted political asylum.

...

However, Turkish television later said one of the hijackers had converted to Christianity and was a conscientious objector, Reuters reports.

It said he had sent a letter to the Pope in late August, asking for his help to avoid compulsory military service in Turkey. It quoted the letter as reading: "I am a Christian and I do not want to serve in a Muslim army."

The History of the Ottoman Empire by Colin Imber is a good read, he might enjoy it!

But in case you don't believe me and because you seem to think that only the ottoman empire has ever been there, the greeks have warred with the rulers of this area:
(not a complete list)
The Trojans (you might have even heard about this one looger, there was a big movie about it
The Persians
The Assyrians
The Samarians
The Egyptians
The Pontics
More recent:

"
Turkey and Greece have clashed for decades over the status of Aegean islands and over the extent of territorial waters and airspace. The tensions came to the brink of war on a number of occasions, most recently in 1996, when Greek and Turkish warships faced each other close to the disputed İmia-Kardak rocks. Only U.S. and NATO intervention subsided the conflict (See also: Imia-Kardak crisis).
Relations have since improved, particularly after earthquakes struck both countries in
1999. However, the Imia issue sprang up again on a smaller scale in 2004."

And they have only been in 4 wars since 1832. I guess things have been rosy!

Relations between
Greece and Turkey have been marked by alternating periods of mutual hostility and reconciliation ever since Greece won its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1832. Since then the two countries have faced each other in four wars - the Greco-Turkish War (1897), the Balkan Wars of 1912 to 1913, the First World War (1914 to 1918) and the Greco-Turkish War (1919-1922).
PS: This all occurred prior to last week.

even after greece as a country broke away from the ottoman empire violently, many greeks stayed in the empire.

it was turkey's nationalist rise that chased all the greeks out, the rise of the republic.

yes, there are many wars between these cultures, but it's important to distinguish between constant strife and occasional spillovers. the neo-con mantra of 'sorting all this out' is such a load, fact is nearly every neighbour everywhere has had conflicts throughout history going all the way back to wandering tribes. greece / turkey is one of the bigger ones, yes, but a careful study of the ottoman and hohenzollern empires reveals some interesting dynamics.

i wasn't saying what you're obviously accusing me of saying, nice try.

i was saying that these two cultures had been coexisting in the ottoman empire, AFTER greek secession. make of that what you want, you always do.

as to the book brought up i haven't read it, a similar work is ann macmillan's 'paris 1919' which i recommend wholeheartedly, in fact i've bought it as a gift.

restating how these cultures co-existed in the same borders a few generations ago.

yep. retraction.

if you're going to lie, why not have the good sense to keep it to private messages?

why show off your sickness to everyone here? there might actually be a few who haven't realized your amazing google-related knowledge of all things yet.
