Yeah, let's fire Treliving because he works too hard. I mean, if he were a better GM he'd be more efficient with his time and not have to be up all night, right?
I think some people just love to complain about whoever is in charge. I'm sure it's the same way at their own jobs where I assume they are NOT the ones in charge.

Can't agree in any way.
Treliving wanted a different coach, so dumped Hartley immediately. This was exactly the right move, as is taking time in hiring new coach. Nothing in limbo for the players at all

Leaving the players in limbo? The season is over. There aren't any team practices scheduled for months. The players don't have to see one another for quite some time if they don't want to. I fail to see how they are "left in limbo" at all.

It appears the fans that are overly emotional about the Hartley firing are attempting to manufacture non-issues into issues.

I'd rather hear that he's working hard and making calls instead of hearing he thinks the team will turn it around this year and another high draft pick will really help. He sees that the team has issues and he wants to fix them so he's doing his best. You can bring up the 3 headed goalie monster but what else was he supposed to do? He made a mistake and owned up to it but there was no easy way out. No GM is perfect but at least he admitted he made mistakes and he's learning from them. As for the coaching situation, I think it would have been a mistake for him to hire someone for the team when he wasn't even on the same continent. He's back now and I'm expecting another busy off season.

That mistake arguably cost the Flames a full season and a potential playoff spot. Pretty huge mistake.

If I am a player needing to be resigned I want to know who my coach is going to be before putting pen to paper. Same goes for upcoming free agency. Need to have a captain for the ship in the next week.

It was the quality of goaltending (and defence) that cost us.
When does free agency open again?

If this is true, then you must be of the opinion that making a decision earlier to enter the season with two of Hiller, Ortio, or Ramo would have been much better for the Flames. The reason that the Flames started with three goalies on the roster was because the GM was actively trying to improve that position right up until training camp.
The quality of goaltending cost the Flames a playoff spot, not their rotation order.

The Flames most important pending FAs are not waiting to see who the coach will be before committing pen to paper. That's ridiculous. There is still more than a full month before UFA season begins. Plenty of time for Treliving to hire a coach, and not at all something he should be chided for.

That's a load of BS. Having 3 goalies wasn't that bad. Having 3 goalies who couldn't stop a beach ball was what killed the team. If they psyche was so fragile that having 3 goalies on the roster made them play that poorly, it's a good thing the team figured out what they had before re-signing them. If you're being so absurd about it, you can argue that having 3 goalies actually helped the team, all 3 goalies were playing bad and having 3 of them just gave the team an option to go with whoever was the "best of the worst". Either way, it was a mistake and he owned up to it.

More BS. If players are going to base their decision of signing with a team on what coach is currently there, I don't think I'd want those players. I'm sure the coach may have some bearing on things but not that much, I'd say who's on the team, their direction and money are way more important. And wouldn't it look worse for a GM to fire a coach then hire a new one all while not even being in the same country look a little bush league? I think players look at how the team is being run as a whole more than if the team was in a rush to hire a new coach.

I get the criticism of Treliving. It comes with the territory. As fans of a Canadian team I suppose it's our right to criticize.
But the out of proportion ridiculousness and suggesting that he should be fired is absurd. Who should replace him?
I think the goalie situation is a mountain out of a molehill. Yes it was not ideal. But if any of them could have stopped a beach ball then we wouldn't even be talking about it.
This opinion will probably be criticized, but I think Hartley was also to blame for the 3 goalie situation. Ortio deserved his chance, he blew it. But then the randomness of who received the starts was all over the map and I'm sure both Ramo and Hiller were still looking over their shoulder at Ortio. When everybody is stinking up the joint, just give it to a guy and let him get into a groove. As we saw when it was too late Ramo finally found some consistency.
Hindsight is 20/20 of course.
This is the most comfortable I have been with a management team since the early days of Darryl Sutter, and nothing that has happened over the past year has changed that.

There really is no point in arguing with those who blame Treliving for the goalie thing. I honestly think these people are just relatives of Feaster and Hartley.
-those same 3 goalies got the Flames to the 2nd round of the playoffs the year before;
- the head coach has a greater influence and responsibilities on the goalies and players than the GM, so if there is anyone to blame for sudden poor play, it is Hartley. I honestly believe it wa Hartley who mismanaged the goalies with his favouritism to Ramo over Hiller, which destroyed Hillers confidence;
- despite the success of the goalies the previous year, Treliving was still typrying hard to improve the position, but when the opportunity came to acquire Hamilton, the assets for a goalie were used up, hard to blame him for that;
- no one, no expert, no basement blogger, no Feaster fan, no Hartley fan, no Treliving fan, could have predicted how poorly the flames goalies played. It is similar to how bad the Jays offense is right now, completely unpredictable and not consistent with historical stats.

This is what gives me confidence that the Flames will be OK in their goalie search this summer. I recall that BT was in the discussions for both Talbot and Jones, and frankly I thought that wasn't a good idea. It worried me that extrapolating a backup's numbers is very dangerous, but it seems he did identify a quality starter in those two. Hopefully he can wade through this years potential targets and see the same starter potential.

I agree with this as this summer is huge for the organization. I think the team is moving away from the "rebuilding" tag this year and will want to push forward to becoming a consistent playoff team and then contender.
The team entered a rebuild 3.5 seasons ago and I think they hope to contend by year 5. Lookobg at the roster today they have an impressive 1-3 centre trio of drafted players. Monahan is a legit number 1 centre with multiple 60+pt seasons at 21. Bennett had 36pts as a 19 year old rookie and has the tools to be our best player down the line. Backlund at 26/27 has finally become a player many hoped he would be. He is a great 2 way centre that has found his offensive touch.
On the blueline the Flames boast one of the better top 3 D in the league. Brodie and Hamilton are also young players that have a decade plus of good ply ahead of them. Gio is a late bloomer that has career year after career year in his 30's.
In net work needs to be done. Gillies and McDonald are great prospects for the future but a goalie of today needs to be acquired and I have no doubt that happens this summer
The prospect pool is decent considering the amount of players that have graduated over the last 3 years.
The Flames were pissed they performed so poorly this year but I don't think anyone was shocked by the fall back. I do think regressing the entire 20pts they jumped from 14-15 was a bit of a shock to management.
This is an important draft and summer. New coach, some new players, and new expectations. Firing Hartley was one way Treliving stated he wanted to move the organization forward. The moves he makes this summer will also move the team forward. I think the expectation of the franchise is to be a contender starting very soon. Gaudreau and Monahan will be paid like stars and the team will be up against the cap.
I am of the belief the rebuilding phase ends this summer and the team we are rooting for next year will be a better team with higher expectations. The heat will be on Treliving if the team is in the same spot they are today one year from now

I don't dissagree, people work hard. But all we've heard on this site for the past week or so is, "when is he getting back", "needs to start working on Flames stuff", "I want to know what's going on with the coach", "why does he need to be there"........blah blah blah.
So then someone writes and article that seems to address what was on Flames fans minds (if this site can be used as a proxy for what many fans are likely thinking), and then a bunch of the fans come on and complain about the news saying that it really isn't saying much (which I agree).
Damned if you do, damned if you don't I guess.
