Friedman says Kings are willing to let teams talk to Stevens or Payne only if there are assurances that they will be top 2 or 3 candidates for the job

From what he can tell no one has given the Kings that assurance.

Those are pretty stupid terms. Either candidate will go through the interview process like everyone else, and it's not like either is going to reveal trade secrets.

He re-upped with the Kings.

Now that the worlds are over and Treliving will be back in Calgary I would assume that we can finally expect to hear some actual rumours.

For reference, Treliving was hired on April 28, 2014 and the club announced Conroy and Pascall as AGMs on June 6, 2014. I fully expect something to be done by the second week in June, if not sooner.

I hope it's sooner cause this waiting for Brad to do other duties, then focusing back on the Flames is driving me bonkers. Good thing I trust this guy a bit.

Well that's daft. How the heck do teams know they'll be top candidates if they're not allowed to talk?

Eventually a couple of expansion teams will be added which will nestle the Oilers into 16th.

So just say yes they will be, and if they aren't chosen, just claim that they were the runner ups?

I wonder if they know it's daft, but it's also an interesting way to keep him out of a division rivals process if they know we want to have a broad search and they aren't keen on giving him a head coaching chance in division.

Or Treliving can narrow his current list down to 2 coaches and then interview Stevens as the 3rd.

He could, but that's likely not conducive to his process. If Treliving was comfortable making Stevens a final 3 candidate for our job( and he might be), he'll simply do what you suggest. If Treliving feels like he needs to put Stevens through whatever process he's doing with others to determine his comfort, he's likely just going avoid Stevens based on these terms unless he can't find anyone else he's happy with.

I understand the point your trying to make. But starting a new role as GM in a new city isn't comparable to coming home from a tournament.

Unfortunately, we can't use past actions as a benchmark in this case.

Who cares when he hires the coach? As long as it's in enough time for the coach to be prepared to run and start training camp, what does it matter?

As has been mentioned, it impacts free agency. Players will want to know who the coach will be before considering signing here.

I can't see us hitting free agency without a coach. I would be surprised if we didn't have a coach by draft day honestly.

I think Tree hires a coach off the board.
