Where is McDavid?

For all the talk about how he's automatically one of the best players in the world already, ready to take the #1 spot from Crosby etc etc etc...

He's looked completely ordinary in this tournament when he should be dominating.

Just goes to show those who extrapolate the numbers from his small sample size in his rookie season like that is now his norm / he'll build on that - are extremely premature.

I think the fact that both Matthews and Laine have outperformed McDavid in this tournament has to worry the Oilers. Is it possible the kid is really gifted, but not quite the generational talent he was hyped to be?

I find this McDavid hate a bit sad and OTT. So he doesn't dominate a World Championship tournament at 19. Big deal. Him not dominating this tournament shouldn't worry the Oilers or anyone else for that matter. He still put up over a point a game for a garbage Oilers team last season. He'll turn into a fantastic player(unfortunately for us), this tournament should do nothing to change that. Why he gets so much hate when he never proclaimed himself as the next Crosby. He doesn't hype himself up as the heir apparent. Feels like the player is getting hate for the fans/media overhyping him. Oh and the fact he plays for the Oilers.

No wonder players hate playing in Canada when they are subject to this much criticism, especially in meaningless tournaments.

How is it "hate" to point out that someone who is being hyped beyond the point of nausea isn't living up to expectations?

Once again, there is talk he is already the best player in the world.

For all those who spew that, he isn't coming close to living up to it at present.

It's not hate to point out the expectations and hype is extremely over-blown and premature.

He is still a fantastic young talent, but pointing out it remains to be seen whether or not his is a once-in-a-generation talent - is in no way "hate".

You mean taking a bunch of players from the second worst team in professional hockey wasnt a good plan? And relying on the starting Goaltender from that team wasnt wise? No way...

I rarely find myself disliking Team Canada, but Marchand, Perry and handful of Oilers are tough to cheer for regardless of the jersey they're wearing.

I think there isn't nearly as much separating the top players as the media would lead people to believe. The term 'generational player' is something we seem to hear about an awful lot and it makes no sense when you actually watch these guys. Kane, Benn, Crosby, Ovechkin, Gaudreau, McDavid, Laine, Matthews, Seguin, Karlsson, Subban, Eichel and many, many others... all these guys are amazing/will be amazing in their own right but there is always this insatiable need to rank, organize, categorize and label these talents.

Gretzky, Lemieux and Orr were all a clear cut above but what follows after are the most miniscule degrees of separation that can't really be proven because no one can watch every game these guys play, and many careers don't overlap and then you're comparing eras which is even worse. These guys all will have careers that will last a couple decades and will have up years and down years in between.

Generational? I'll buy the hype just as soon as one of these guys can pump in 60+ goals and 140+ points consistently. Until then, to me, there is a huge field comprised of many great players that could all theoretically be the center peice of a cup team or win the Art Ross winner in any given year.

No he didnt, you just skated into the goalie now sit and feel shame.

I find it strange that McDavid is underperforming on a team vastly superior to the Oilers. Maybe his point totals would be lower if the Oilers were a team that had better players.
