Things Ive learned this period.
Schieffle falls down a lot.
Hall is still clueless and lost in his own zone.
The Dad from Alf wont be coaching Sweden after this tournament.
Canada goes up 1 0

They're getting rid of Pall Mall?

At the other end of the ice, does it make me a bad person that I am enjoying seeing Markstrom get lit up?

This could potentially be the worst Swedish team to ever play a World Championship. Hopefully a coaching change can make Swedish NHL players willing to play this tournament again.

I'm kind of surprised Dumba has turned out to be a pretty good player. Brassard is also quietly Canada's top scorer. I've never heard much about him before this.

Can they hurry up and throw this thing already so we can get Brad back to do his real job?

I dont actually know why hes there. Hes one of the GMs, is there anything he can do? Add or subtract players?
Its kind of like what Burke said so many years ago about when a team makes the playoffs the GMs job is done and hes basically just the biggest cheerleader.
Is it scouting? Because I doubt its for the free Russian vacation.

Because he's part of the team? To show support, perhaps?

Scouting would be my guess, and maybe meeting some people too. There's already been at least one signing during the tournament. (The Hungarian goalie Adam Vay signed with the Wild. He looked real good v. Finland at least.) Having our GM there might also help with getting guys signed if there's competition. Maybe he's checking out some of the Euro coaches?
Although Russia isn't a bad place for a vacation either. St. Petersburg especially is a beautiful city. (At least the parts where tourists would visit.)

It's a great opportunity for Treliving to build relationships with some great Canadian talent. Every little bit of positive publicity amongst players is a good thing. Perhaps some of these guys meet Treliving for the first time and are impressed by how he carries himself, it can only help down the line when it hypothetically becomes time to pitch a guy on why he should sign in Calgary.

I'm sure Treliving is having lots of conversations with Calvin Pickard. I don't think it's a coincidence that Pickard was selected as one of the goalies for the team. I'm sure there are also coaching candidates at the tournament that Treliving has been speaking with.
There is probably a sizeable NHL community at this tournament right now, so Treliving can have a lot of conversations about many topics (coaches, trades, scouting, etc.).
He's definitely not there for a vacation. Honestly, if your team is out of the Stanley Cup playoffs, any good GM should be at the Worlds because it is a great networking forum.

I have watched 4 of the Finland games this tournament and their goalie, Mikko Koskinen, has been really impressive. He is the kind of player that I wouldn't mind seeing the Flames take a chance on. If he isn't "NHL-ready" right now I think he could get to that level pretty fast. Hopefully Treliving has been watching that guy.
I want to see Koskinen go up against Team Canada again this tournament (gold medal match.)

Saw the last two periods of this game and the Fins were solid. Opportunistic when they had chances and Koskin made some big saves. Pretty impressed with Aho, sure hope the 35th pick in this draft is as good as he is.

The Russians were SO bad. No traffic, no one going to the net, just one-timer after one-timer from the perimeter. Just so awful and predictable. Even the cycle was poor and terrible.
"Hey theres Ovechkin with his stick in the air, I wonder what hes about to do?"
