Ducks are just making sure they hire someone who won't allow the Honda curse to be broken.

This will be coach #5 since the last W for Calgary.

Has anyone heard of Kelly McCrimmon? He'd be a good coach...

I don't know many of the names being tossed out, but from the ones I have heard of I'm not convinced we are upgrading from Hartley here.

Hartley is so good he probably won't ever coach in NHL again

He won the jack adams 1 year ago. So, somebody thinks he's good.

You think Mike Yeo is better than Hartley? The guy with the temper tantrum on the ice at practice with his team?

Hartley was 3 points away from not even being nominated for the Adams, I don't put a lot of stock into that award at all. He's a thoroughly average coach who has gotten less than average results in his last two stops. Usually average, older coaches don't get four kicks at the can but we will see I guess. I lump Yeo into the same category as Hartley but he's only had one chance so far.

I'd be fine with Yeo getting another kick or two at the can as long as it's with with the Flames.

Nope but then again Yeo hasn't been hired so that's pretty moot. I actually think Yeo would probably get the Flames closer to the playoffs than Hartley did 3/4 seasons but I think the idea of this entire coaching search is to find a guy that can get the team to take that next step to perennial playoff team to which I don't see from Yeo given his body of work in Minnesota.

Lets get one thing out of the way so we can end this pointless Hartley discussion in this thread. Making the playoffs once in four seasons while the other three seasons the team placed 25, 25, 26th overall is not the sign of good coaching. It's the sign of a pretty bad coach that caught lighting in a bottle one season. The first two months of the 2015/2016 season was the worst hockey a Flames team has ever played in their Calgary existence. Just awful hockey and while the players played a role this was a sign of a coach that was in over his head in today's NHL.

Well he took over a franchise about to gut itself and returned a heck of a lot of pride to the organization.

Those rosters weren't playoff destined with Al Arbour and Scotty Bowman behind the bench.

I'll give you that the playoff spot was fortunate, but he wasn't a terrible coach.

I tend to agree with Treliving he's done what he can.

Isn't this thread supposed to be about news and rumours about the Flames' next coach, with opinion and commentary in the various other threads on this topic?

Here's the voting for the Jack Adams award when he won:

1. Bob Hartley, CGY 237 (37-13-13)
2. Alain Vigneault, NYR 121 (14-13-12)
3. Peter Laviolette, NSH 81 (6-14-9)
4. Paul Maurice, WPG 79 (6-13-10)
5. Barry Trotz, WSH 36 (2-5-11)

So to correct your claim, Hartley was 158 points away from not being a finalist (which is what I'm assuming you meant to say)...which is actually more points than what the 2nd place finisher received. All coaches are technically nominated (since you can vote for anyone)...it's just the top 3 vote-getters are considered the "finalists" when it comes time for the awards show.

The team was 3 points away from not making the playoffs. While the team was rebuilding is valid context, the award means almost nothing

Some revisionist history;

Season 1: In Hartley's first season the Flames added free agents Hudler and Wideman to a veteran roster captained by Iginla and the goal was to make the playoffs. The results were failure and finishing 25th overall.

Season 2: The 2nd season the team was gutted and expectations were to rebuild and the team finished 27 which wasn't unexpected. Strong 2nd half was encouraging.

Season 3: Some offseason moves were made to shore up goaltending (addition of Hiller) and some toughness added (Engelland, Bollig) but expectations again low seeing Cammalleri was essentially replaced by Raymond. Still the team overachieved in a big way with several rookies coming out of nowhere to post double digit goal totals and Hudler/Giordano with career seasons combined with some puck luck and the team has arguably it's best season since 2004. Definitely Hartley's finest achievement since winning the cup in Colorado.

Season 4: Building off last season's playoff success the roster is bolstered by the additions of Hamilton and Frolik and the goal is to make the playoffs and improve off last season. The results were a disaster. Worst start in Calgary Flames history and a 25th place finish.

Treliving is definitely correct in that he took the franchise as far as he could and his history points to a coach that was okay at making a low expectation roster play at or above expectations but when handed a roster with expectations the results were poor. I never said he was an "awful" coach but the fact is that he wasn't a very good coach as even the playoff season the team didn't play fundamentally good hockey. I get that the 2014/15 season bought him a tonne of goodwill but if you look objectively at the team's annual standings under him as well as the overall play of the team during his four seasons there's really no way you can say he's a good coach in today's NHL.

The Flames were lipstick on a pig when he was hired and you know it.

The culture was ruined, they were going through coaches like pressbox popcorn and the leadership group was doing their own thing.

Adding some more lipstick doesn't change the fact that he was the third guy brought in to fix something that wasn't going to get fixed.

Agreed but he took over an improved roster over Brent's last season and the results were considerably worse. Brent had the same lipstick on a pig roster less Hudler and Wideman and got three straight 90 point seasons out of it. We all know that Brent isn't considered around here as a great coach by many so I stand by my comment that his first season was failure.
