Flames Monahan contract talks: "Not very far along" yet

per his agent

http://www.thefourthperiod.com/colum.../dp160518.html

Quote:
But the two sides haven't gotten down to the nitty-gritty negotiations just yet, and Monahan's agent, Pat Morris, told me on Wednesday they are "not very far along."

"There's been lots of general chatter, but we are not down to specifics," he said.

"I just don't know where they're coming from yet, other than a strong expression that they want to get Sean signed."
Quote:
"Time is always on the player's side," Morris said, "but they chose not to do an extension (during the season or last summer), as some teams have done with their young players."

Monahan wants a long-term contract, presumably in the six-to-eight year range, and could command around $6 million per season. Again, term and dollars haven't really been discussed, to date.

"That's all going to depend on what Calgary's thinking," Morris said, in reference to a long-term extension, adding that a short-term bridge contract is "not likely."

"He enjoys Calgary and certainly has excelled there. He wants the relationship to continue."

Contract negotiations are expected to intensify after the World Championships when Treliving returns from St. Petersburg, Russia.

While Morris admitted he and Treliving "talk a lot," the two sides are likely to discuss this specific matter and hammer out a deal in the coming weeks.

Not worried, I'd expect Treliving to start dealing with things once he's back in town.

No surprise with BT overseas. Both him and Gaudreau will get done to long term deals in the near future, no worries.

Glad to hear he's looking to sign a long-term deal and a bridge contract isn't likely. Interesting comment regarding how Treliving chose not to do an extension last summer or during the year, while other players got their contracts sorted out. That might have cost some extra $$$ as Monahan put up another solid year to back his demands. Either way, I'm hoping he comes in at the $6M referenced in the article.

It's May. I wouldn't worry about this unless it isn't done by September. Bouma didn't get done until August.

It is a process where both sides like to wait until the last minute. Monahan is holding all of the cards right now. Just get it done before training camp.

I'm more curious if it's just not a burning issue for either management or the player and agent, as they are both very comfortable that it will get done, and they aren't far off in an agreement to begin with. This isn't a Bouma or Colborne situation, Monahan and Gaudreau are young franchise players. I don't think Treliving will try to low ball, and as they are RFA without arb rights, I doubt the agents high ball it. There's likely a million dollar window for both players, and they'll settle somewhere in between. Monahan will get $6-$6.5 and Johnny $6.75-$7.25 on long term deals.

4 of those years would be pre-UFA. Pretty mediocre deal if you ask me.

Now if it were 8 x $6, that would be a great deal.

I don't think anyone is complaining as long as the dollar value is <6.5M

Before anyone starts panicking, here are some of the major RFAs that are also unsigned at the moment:

Lindholm, Vatanen, Pirri, Rakell, Andersen, Krug, Ristolainen, Shaw, MacKinnon, Barrie, Seth Jones, Trocheck, Dumba, Forsberg, Kreider, Miller, Hoffman, Ceci, Hertl, Stamkos, Kucherov, Johansson, Schiefele, Trouba.

Plenty of other players and teams in the same situation. Ok, some of those are different because the player is still playing in the play offs or are away at the World Championships, but the point remains. Loads of RFAs not signed yet.

I'm pleased we heard from his agent so we know where we are up to. It'll get done before the draft I reckon. Brad is going to have a busy few weeks leading up to the draft. Him being away at the World Championships has been a bit of a bummer, his work load is starting to pile up in his absence.

6-8 years at $6M would be fantastic. I'm expecting a bit more if we're signing him for that long though.

21 years old, and has already scored 80 regular season goals in the NHL.

6x6 wouldn't be fantastic. It'd merely be acceptable.

We'd be giving away to much in his RFA years for not enough on the UFA years for it to be fantastic. The whole idea of going long term on the second contract is that they'll get more money then they would otherwise get on their RFA years while the team get's a break on the UFA years where the team would otherwise have no leverage. I think he will cost a bit more then a straight 6 if we go to 8... but it shouldn't be much more.

First Johnny going to the Flyers, now Monahan contract talks going no where. What's next, Bennett asking for a trade?

What a disaster this rebuild is.
