Default Flames' all-time, top-10, individual seasons: #9 belongs to #30

“Save your breath,’’ scolded (Hakan Loob) admonishingly, post-survival, to a cluster of shaggy media mongrels. “I know the question. Mike Vernon can’t do it in the playoffs, right? He chokes, right?"

“OK, so who saved our ass in OT? Vernie. He gave us the chance to win. Without him, we’re finished. That reputation - one he’s never deserved - rub it out."

“Now."

This guy was literally my idol when I was growing up. I was the biggest Vernie fan ever!

37-6-5 is absolutely ######ed by any standards.

That's crazy. I figured Fuhr would have some stellar single season stats. But he doesn't even come close to Vernon's best season. Vernon was pretty amazing considering his size

Even more incredible when you include the playoffs: 53-11-3.

Vernon was my goaltending hero growing up. He was fantastic.

Guy definitely was one of those guys that a large part of the fan base never gave enough credit to, preferring to overlook his achievements and focus on his shortcomings. Huge part of the cup team.

28 years after watching this unfold from my living room, and I still wig out whenever I see it...

Wow - I remember his save on Smyl, but there's three other gigantic saves in that clip. I remember the Flames being lucky to get out of that series, but I had forgotten just how close they came to going home.

Vernon was unreal against Montreal too, decisively outplaying Roy. He should have won the Conn Smythe that year.

Ridiculous that he isn't in the Hall of Fame.

I was a big Vernie fan too, but I remember both sides of the coin... like those consistent long shots from the blueline that always found the 5-hole at the least opportune time...

That being said, we wouldn't have a cup without him!

The math doesn't add up. He had negative 2 ties in the playoffs?

Cant wait for the rest of this list. Iggy, Kipper and Joe will all be there. But I am interested to see if Dion or Johnny make it for their rookie seasons.

Love Vernon. My first ever autograph was him signing a puck for me at the Southcentre Safeway.

Still think the Flames win the 1995 Stanley Cup if Vernon is never traded...

Wow how well I remember that moment, that game was so incredible and I was losing my mind watching that game in my basement. Can pretty much draw exactly the whole room in my mind, the table, the sofa, the TV, the smells. OMG.

Lanny's 66 goal season will be one.
Nilsson's 131 points will be another.
Iggy's scoring title will be one.
Nieuwendyk's rookie year with 51 goals.
Al MacInnis getting 100 points.
Kipper's Vezina Trophy winning season
I'd think Gilmour, Mullen, and Fleury will get in somewhere. Maybe Suter.
