My time in Edmonton so far
Hey all. I posted some time ago that I was moving to Edmonton. Just thought I would share my first 6 months in Oil town.
First off, we are renting in a community called Inglewood, which is very similar to Forrest Lawn. I did not know this when we rented.
Work is good for my wife and I. And we have purchased a house in the far SE, a community called Tamarack.
The one thing that I am very surprised/happy with, is the vast majority of Edmontonians are very friendly. They do wear sweat pants galore, and the orange and blue is so putrid. But sheite, they are nice.
We move into our new place in June, then can relax and enjoy the rest of the summer.

Nice. I loved living in Edmonton. Whyte Ave is nice and the Fringe was always fun. Glad you're enjoying it

Make sure to wear a Flames jersey to work during the hockey season.

Edmonton as a city is not that bad. There is worse in Canada, being born in Winnipeg living in Regina and Saskatoon I know what I am talking about.
It just too bad the people their have no clue about hockey. Friendly folks, just no hockey sense. Its like my mentally challenged nephew he smiles a lot and has no clue what is going on. I am going to hell.
That was a dig forsure. Never the less props to the city and people with the Fort Mac fires. Edmonton took a big hit with the influx of people.
Good people, bad hockey team lol!

I lived in Edmonton for two years and liked it. I just wished it was closer to the mountains.

We lived just to the north of your new neighbourhood, in Wild Rose about 10 years ago. We really liked it there.
The new rec centre looks pretty nice.

I am likely moving up there in short order. Already have a place in Garneau, I freaking love that neighbourhood.

Actually make sure you never wear a hockey jersey to work regardless of the team.

Having spent both a fair amount of time in Edmonton visiting relatives as a kid and them living there going to university and for a few years after this really isn't a surprise. Rivalry aside, the people are not that different from Calgary and it is a very nice city to live in. Honestly there is not a lot that distinguishes it from Calgary, the neighborhoods are basically the same, stores and restaurants etc. all the same. People are very nice and as we are seeing with the Ft. McMurray situation they are incredibly giving when times are tough.
You are coming into the nicest part of the year too, summer kicks ass over what we call summer here. The weather is nicer in my opinion as temperatures stay warmer into the evening making it more enjoyable to be outside.
Congrats on your new place. Tamarack is a new area for me but I used to live not far from there. Good location being close to both the Henday and Whitemud.

The biggest difference I found between Edmonton and Calgary is that there are a lot more shady-looking people (drunks, hobos, etc.) hanging around Edmonton than here in Calgary. Where would they go when the new arena opens?

Really? I thought the opposite and just assumed it was because there is nicer weather here that they migrate here.

Edmonton has it's fair share of street weirdos but it's no different from Calgary. You find the same people around East Village, Crack Macs and Rocky Mountain Plaza as you do Alberta Avenue. They do tend to come downtown more in the 'Chuk though.
