I don't understand why Julien Gauthier doesn't get rated higher. Everything I read about him is so positive...
Good size, high hockey IQ, great skater, very strong, high compete level, unreal shot, athletic genes, instinctive...
I wouldn't be upset to trade down a few spots for this kid.

I'm officially ready for the draft. Overdone, overripe. Let's go.

I feel really confident with our current management group. Treliving, Conroy, Pascall, and Burke is a great group full of experience and various background knowledge.
Also, our scouting staff has been great ever since they've been allowed to do their job (after Sutter left). Monahan, Gaudreau, Bennett, Brodie, Ferland, Janko, Mangiapane, Hickey, Andersson, Kylington, Gillies and the Hamilton trade. There's a lot of late round value in that group. We don't need 1st overalls to build our team. And with 10 picks this draft (5 in the top 90) we have lots of ammo to do what we want.
I am not worried that we will trade a mid 1st and high second for an AHL dman (HAHA Oilers).
I'm excited to see them work their magic on draft day, whether that be trading down or picking their BPA at #6. The draft can't come soon enough!

Apparently, there exists a contingent of both fans and scouts who are questioning his IQ, and feel it is one of his weak spots. He was on a tear scoring at the start of the season, and then slowed down considerably, while not helping his linemates.
I haven't watched him enough to really agree or disagree with those comments, but they are there. I was really high on Gauthier up until the midpoint of the season as well. Will be curious to see where he gets drafted. I wouldn't be opposed to the Flames trading up to get him, but I think there are much better players available at 6 and wouldn't want them to trade down.

It is concerning that he's 5th in scoring on his team which has no other blue chip prospects on it. If he at least equaled his assist totals last year he would probably be in the conversation with Tkachuk and Dubois.

It's really weird with Gauthier. He only has 2 secondary assists all season (even Ovechkin gets more than that), and he doesn't seem to get first line ice time playing for Val- d'Or. My first guess would be to say that his linemates stink so he just does it all himself, flies down the wings and snipes etc, but he could also be making poor use of his linemates.
He's definitely one of the players in the first round that will earn scouts their money.

Typically guys that score significantly more than they collect assists tend to not develop properly. It usually points to deficiencies in their overall game. Even Mantha, who only had 11 fewer assists than goals fell to 20.
I wouldn't be shocked if Gauthier fell hard outside the first round. The Flames may be able to get him at 35 if they choose to go that way.

Corey Pronman's top 15:
1. Patrik Laine LW
2. Auston Matthews C
3. Jesse Puljujarvi RW
4. Clayton Keller C
5. Pierre-Luc Dubois C
6. Matthew Tkachuk LW
7. Alexander Nylander RW
8. Olli Juolevi D
9. Tyson Jost C
10. Dante Fabbro D
11. Jakob Chychrun D
12. Logan Brown C
13. German Rubstov C
14. Kieffer Bellows LW
15. Alex DeBrincat RW
Some other notes:
- Seemed like a coin flip between Dubois, Tkachuk, and Nylander at 5-7.
- No clear top defenceman. Likes Juolevi for his hockey sense and skating.
- Says Brown is a non-factor without the puck, doesn't engage the play enough defensively. Rumours that he doesn't have a good work ethic off the ice. If it wasn't for these negatives, he could have been top 5.
He says except for the first 3 players being above average, the 1st round is average. Says the depth rounds are below average.
Seems like a year where it's better to have quality picks rather than quantity.

I'd love any of the 4-6 forwards. Interesting to see someone have Keller that high though, unless his usual early teen position is solely a function of his size.
No sergaychev (spelling?) either, interesting.

Is Clayton Keller a RHS?

Gauthier is really interesting to me, I'd love to get him because he looks like he's exactly what the Flames need. I've seen some mock ups where he's taken as early as 13 and as late as 30. If the Flames can somehow get him it would be awesome.
There are a couple of guys I think the Flames should target with their seconds if they keep them. Gauthier would be amazing but I don't think everyone will pass on him. Stanley would be great because he seems like a good shut down guy. Bastien is another guy who seems like a great fit. There are a lot of guys I'd really like them to get if available but again, I'd be willing to move most of the picks to get #3.

The one thing with Pronman is that he tends to completely ignore size and grit, and will put an emphasis on more skill.
Which is why smaller guys with high skill (Keller, Fabbro, Debrincat) will tend to be ranked higher on his list compared to others.
For example his 2014 top 10 were:
1 Aaron Ekblad D Barrie OHL
2 Sam Bennett C Kingston OHL
3 William Nylander RW Modo SHL
4 Sam Reinhart C Kootenay WHL
5 Nikolaj Ehlers LW Halifax QMJHL
6 Kevin Fiala LW HV71 SHL
7 Leon Draisaitl C Prince Albert WHL
8 Michael Dal Colle LW Oshawa OHL
9 Kasperi Kapanen RW KalPa Liiga
10 Haydn Fleury D Red Deer WHL
So had guys like Nylander, Ehlers, and Fiala higher on his list than some others. In retrospect he was probably right to have those guys ranked higher than others.

With the Dallas pick set, and the first 10 picks of the draft beaten to death, does anyone have any insight into the potential picks for the three Calgary 2nd rounders?

A few pages back I compiled a list of 2nd round players. I'm kind of high on Tyler Benson and Markus Neimelainen. Neimelainen is a huge D man 6'6" 205. And Benson is a faller because of injury. If either of those guys are gone there's a couple of goalies the Flames can take with their pick in Carter Hart and Filip Gustavsson. Another guy to watch for is 6'4" RHS RW Nathan Bastien from Mississauga, the line mate of future Flame Alex Nylander and top ten pick Mike McLeod.

In some cases, there's a good chance that even if the Flames do not get the Dallas 1st, that some of the guys will be available at the Flames pick in the 2nd round as well. Got my eye on Benson and Neimelainen to be there. Niemelainen looks to be a steal at 6'6 205 lbs already.

Bumping for those curious about some potential 2nd rounders.
