Dude, spire's get tenants. The higher the spire, the better. Good for piking foes, hanging flags and BASE jumping.

I think someone BASE jumped the Bow pretty quick, how long until someone does it on Brookfield?

It's nice that it's tall I guess, but that's a pretty boring looking building. Just looks like a giant glass block.

Sure we will. There's already a contender out there from another developer.I dont see anything starting up soon, but unless the economy totally craters for the long-term, it will be surpassed within a decade at the latest.

Having said that, another 5-10 stories on Brookfield would've definitely been welcome to set it apart a bit more from the Bow.

Is the new tower in Edmonton's Ice District going to be taller?

Lame. Build a 200ft spire then and hang a yuge Canadian flag on it.

Make Canada Great Again.

Maybe we need a wall, too. Between Calgary and Edmonton. Keep the walkers out. Plus, it would be good for employment.

And make Edmonton pay for it!

It is just a simple rectangle, however there is some detail in the design that is quite nice.

The most striking feature that unless you are looking for it you may miss is the rounded corners of the building, a tight radius at the bottom that gets wider as the tower rises. Creating a very neat visual effect.

The glass appears to be of an excellent quality too, which makes a big difference visually.

The crown itself should be quite nice too, with awesome night lighting that will help it stand out from everything else.

Is it still a box (rectangle)? Yes, but it is a very nicely done one.

Just looked it up. Looks like it's going to be a whopping 4 metres taller (251M vs. 247M).

I am not so sure.

If we say the new tower has to be built by the end of the decade, well, then I really doubt it, but lets just say the tower only has to break ground for this discussion.

The commercial real estate vacancy is 20% (or so I remember).

I think it was mentioned that Calgary has simply over-built our downtown, even if it was still boom times, meaning the commercial real estate vacancy would have gone up without a bust.

Add the current oil bust in, I don't think any developer will be competing for Calgary's highest tower in the next decade.

Don't these things tend to go in swings from over supply and around back to over supply with not enough time in the middle ground? We just began the over supply swing.

I would love to hear the thoughts from the poster who works at colliers on this.

They should totally have a hidden 5m tall spire in the crown, and erect it once Edmonton's tops out.

Brookfield Place has officially surpassed the Bow in height, earning the title of Western Canada’s tallest building.

Calgary’s new skyscraper — under construction downtown between 1st and 2nd streets and 6th and 7th avenues S.W. — is now complete to level 56, the top of the building. It has reached its final height of 247 metres — 10 metres taller than the Bow, previously the tallest structure on the Calgary skyline.
Ha ha ha. I know never to read the comments but I can never help myself;

Square boring tower built in a depressing boring city. At least cities like Vancouver, Toronto and NY are building actual interesting towers.
Where are these interesting towers in Vancouver and Toronto?

Unfortunately for us, boring square/rectangular boxes simply make the most money. And Brookfield is all about efficiencies and dollars. The Bow is a nightmare from an owner's perspective.

The top of the crown will be about 1 storey higher than the top of the concrete right now:

I take John Laurie daily from West to East and from that view it looks virtually identical in height to the Bow. Is that the height in this city that becomes cost prohibitive as it would be nice for one of these towers to break out of that cluster of towers all near the height as a lot of the major skylines typically have one or two structures that tower over the others while in Calgary it's a tight cluster of a lot of towers with all the tall ones all in the same ballpark height.

Vancouver? Pass, nothing that immediately springs into my mind.

Toronto? The L Tower. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L_Tower

We've got Telus Sky in the ground and almost at ground level, I'd argue once complete it will be one of the most unique buildings in Canada. Come to think of it the same developer has one like it going up in Vancouver too, so Vancouver would make my list at that point.

Both The Bow and Brookfield are right at that height where to go taller you'll need more elevators, which eats into leasable square footage and thus profits. So in our boom and bust cycles that's why you see so many twins built versus just a few taller buildings.

Isn't the ski jump at COP the highest building in Calgary in terms of altitude? Heard that somewhere.
