Kids came home from school today and told me that 10 students from Ft Mac had just registered this week. I feel for them as this is high school and it's tougher for this age to fit in to a new school at the best of times nevermind the fact there is barely a month left in the year. It will be truly odd for the grade 12 kids in particular, they will be graduating practically alone in a sea of strangers from a school they barely attended.

My daughter is in grade 7 and they have kids new to school.

She brought up the need to be aware of any traumatic situations these students may have endured.

My wife is volunteering today at a centre that is helping displaced peoples.

He's set up an ironing board along highway 63 offering to iron shirts the correct way. What more do you want him to do?

I was hoping there would be none of this, but it looks like there was at least one guy. Glad he got caught.

This is closer to the truth than you think.

Those truly destitute will also get lessons in spit polishing shoes.

I'm probably wrong, but I heard somewhere that it's based on population density. So losing a house is different than losing an apartment complex.

I presume infrastructure, commercial etc are also weighted differently.

I also think that "partial damage" is accounted for very differently as well (ie: Water damage vs burnt to ash). But no idea how they account for a water logged home or homes that may need demolition even if still standing.

I had a debate with a friend. If you ran into someone from Fort Mac, are hand shakes and hugs appropriate? Like a welcome to our city, hug or something. IMO, I didn't see anything wrong with it.

Considering the facts and potential volatility surrounding the case, there should have been a publication ban in place. There is no benefit to the public in releasing his information and it appears the case is flimsy at best.

But the RCMP and the Crown don't care, they won't face consequences if the rushed into this to try and show they had a handle on the situation.

The school of University Elementary has just accepted 90 new registrations as of 10 am. Looking to add 127 max. Teachers welcoming them all with open arms. Most were at the school all night preparing new the rooms to make them look inviting, prepping food for today, gathering donations of supplies, books and so on.

Is it normal to have a publication ban on looting charges? If not, don't blame the RCMP.

Isn't this story a good thing? 1 single case in the town of that size, abandoned and patrolled by the RCMP or not, this is still a great stat.

I'd say that with the amount of “evidence” they have, the fact there is another suspect and the emotions surrounding the whole thing, a publication ban until there is some certainty would be in order.

If it turns out the Crown and RCMP rushed into this, they'll face no consequences. But even if they drop the charges or he is acquitted, he's screwed for life in Fort Mac.

Why do you guys think the crown or RCMP have any say in a publication ban?
That should be on the defender to request, and/or the judge to impose.

None one said the RCMP or the Crown would be requesting a publication ban.

The Crown and the RCMP should be going to court with more of a case to avoid the repercussions that are now inevitable. It's probably not a good sign when the judge at a bail hearing says your case is weak.

Yes, there is going to be some mob rage directed his way, for sure. Probably deservedly.

Based on what does he deserve the mob justice?

Sounds like you did.
You made a comment that there should be a publication ban in place then stated that the RCMP and Crown don't care because there won't be any consequences for them. That pretty clearly implies that you think the Crown/RCMP are responsible for there not being a publication ban.

If anyone should be criticized for not putting a publication ban in place it's the judge who thinks the case is weak, and should understand the repercussions of someone's name getting out during a pretty emotionally charged time.

The RCMP and Crown have nothing to do with it, so leave them out of it.
