Being it's their contract year they could actually play lights out and be good trade bait. You see, sometimes you gotta know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, know when to walk away and know when to run.

To me it makes more sense to retain 50% on Stajan, Wideman and Engelland than to buy them out. At least with salary retention you get cap space for the duration of the contract and no longer (as opposed to buy outs) and you get value in return from a trade.

Raymond can actually helped Andironack, if nothing else. At least there's a 900K savings by burying him.

Am I one of the few that actually like Engelland? I've never got the distaste that some seem to have toward him.
Sure he may be a tad bit overpaid, but he brings an element that all teams need.
I get that the league is going away from the fighting and all, but until this team gets bigger/stronger/tougher, you're gonna need a guy like him. Someone has to stick up for the top players.
I guess at the end of the day, I'd much rather have Engelland on the team than Bollig.

Buying out Raymond makes too much sense. The cap hit on a buyout next season is lower than the cap hit for burying him, and the cap hit in 2017-18 is still low enough that it's not crippling.
I think Smid is likely done. He'll get paid for the final year of his contract, but I doubt he'll play another game. If need be, he'll easily clear waivers (and if not, even better for both him and the team).
There should be a market for Wideman. They'll probably have to retain salary, but that's better than a buyout. Oilers are a good fit. It would be a dream if they could swap picks 4 for 6 and only have to give up Wideman to make it happen.
Stajan and Engelland both seem to be well-liked by management. If someone wanted them in a trade, I'm sure Treliving would make it happen, but otherwise, I don't think they're going anywhere. Stajan also seems like a good candidate for a veteran leader on an expansion team in a year.

I guess the ECHL is the next best thing to firing him into the sun but I don't think his contract will allow that, besides he seemed to fit into Stockton fairly well.

Smid is the only one I'd consider buying out if he is not in agreement to LTIRetire due to his neck issues. I'd prefer not to buy him out, but IMO he's the only one worth considering this off season so that we can resolve a slight log jam on D.
Engelland I'd just ride out the contract, trade if someone is interested. I wouldn't salary retain him, or not much anyways.
Stajan, I think I want to see if that season ending RW experiment can work till the end of the contract. If can trade no salary retained in a decent deal. Jump at it.
Raymond, I'd give one more chance this season. If suck, AHL it is, buy him out the next off season. If someone will take him barely or no salary retained, I'd jump at it.
Wideman I'm sure can be moved salary retained(or not) at the TDL. No need to waste buying him out.

I would also take him over Smid or Wideman.

Raymond: No point buying him out. The cap saving in '16-17 would be offset by the buyout cap hit in '17-18, compared to just burying him in the AHL.
Smid: I consider it unlikely he'll be medically cleared to play. From what I hear, he may just wind up on LTIR until his contract is up, and then retire. In that case, he isn't taking up a roster spot and his cap hit is immaterial.
Stajan: Overpaid for what he brings, but I hate the thought of paying a buyout for four more years. Would rather trade him with 50% retained, even for a bag of pucks, and get the pain over with sooner.
Engelland: Brings something to the team that nobody else does. Yes, he's overpaid, but one more year of his contract isn't going to prevent any necessary moves.
Wideman, I think, is the best buyout candidate of the lot. I suspect he torpedoed whatever trade value he had with his disastrous finish to the season. If Treliving couldn't find a taker after his 56-point season, as reported, his value must be negative now. NTC means burying him is not an option, so a buyout would be the only way to save any part of his cap hit.

If we have to protect Wideman during the expansion draft then I'd want him bought out.

Raymond isn't really that old so there's really no issue with him being a veteran presence for the Heat. If Smid is proclaimed healthy he would be the only player that I would endorse buying out because he takes up a valuable spot on the NHL roster and I don't see the value of paying him $3.5 million to play for the heat as his career is near the end.

The decision depends on the finalized expansion rules.

Depends on the expansion draft rules.... all NMCs need to be protected but it's not clear if guys who will become UFAs need to be protected. In the past they have I believe.
If that's the case Wideman has to go, keeping him would mean losing one of Hamilton, Brodie or Gio. Hopefully he is healthy enough to be bought out.
Smid is going to be on the injured list all year and won't count anyway. Other ones, just wait them out. Except maybe Stajan. If Janko is ready next summer, buy him out then. For one more year, he's good cover for the young players/press box material.

No buy outs. This team is not a player away from contending this year so the immediate cap space is not that important. I also don't believe there is a must have UFA who would be a valuable addition long term but would require immediate cap relief to sign.
I suppose if another Hamilton type trade comes along maybe you do it, if needed.
Buy outs are signs of a poorly managed team since you are essentially penalized, having to carry dead money on your cap. I vote for not signing any more bad contracts.

Yes, why are the Flames going to waste cap space moving forward to buy out a bunch of expiring contracts? The Wideman NMC expansion draft talk provides food for thought, but other than that, it's just a silly impulsive thing to do that hurts the team long term. We need to have patience.

If you can sign Nakladal to a 2 year deal for a low is number I would buy out Wideman. Keeping Wideman on the roster uses up a spot on the roster that I personally think holds the team back.
