Default Cullen's TSN Off Season Game Plan : Calgary Flames

http://www.tsn.ca/off-season-game-pl...lames-1.486859

I don't want to hammer the guy as I know it would be tough to write these without following the team day to day but he made a few boo boos ...

Quote:
A veteran centre whose role has been reduced significantly in the past couple of seasons, Matt Stajan was buried in the defensive zone last season and is paid more than his role would typically warrant; that could make him a candidate for a buyout, though it would require filling another hole, because the Flames aren't exactly overloaded with NHL-ready centre prospects
Not sure I agree with that one ...

Quote:
Acquired from Toronto for a fourth-round pick in 2013, Joe Colborne has been a decent contributor in three seasons with the Flames, finishing last season with a flourish as he got to skate alongside Gaudreau and Monahan once Jiri Hudler was shipped to Florida. That led to career-best goal and point totals and even if he may not be the long-term answer on the number one line, his late-season success ought to open the possibility of Colborne holding down a regular spot on a scoring line.
Put up most of his points playing with Backlund ...

On Wideman ...

Quote:
but the Flames probably need him to fill 20-plus minutes per game on the blueline, like he has with every team he's played on over the past decade.
Huh?

Has the Flames adding Boedeker and Reimer.

He should have just admitted that he didnt watch the Flames at all, has no clue what players they have or need and moved along.

Boedker is an interesting note due to the connection with Arizona - wonder if Treliving would have any interest from his time in Arizona.

Personally am not that big of a fan but could see it.

These articles are probably tough to do for all 30 teams, especially when the writer is trying to offer insight.

However, get your facts wrong, and it goes from 'insightful' to 'careless'. At least have the article proof-read by someone that follows the team more closely? I like articles like these, but when they get some facts so wrong, it just screams 'careless' to me, or 'I couldn't be bothered to double-check facts for a team like Calgary'.

I don't see how Boedker is a realistic addition for this team. Will be pretty expensive when this team will already have trouble fitting everybody soundly under the cap. Poor possession player, likely not high on Brad's list. He's not needed at all.

Ya, let's give the clueless guy a break because it would be difficult to follow 30 teams at once. As a guy who has a job that requires me to do certain difficult things, myself and my boss can totally relate to this jackass when I tell him things like, 'I was going to totally do some due diligence before the meeting, but I had this other meeting, so I just winged both of them and made us all look like fools!'

When you finish close to dead last in the league, not all player reviews can be positive. We need a goalie and top end winger. Many of our bottom 6 had terrible years and are overpaid while several in the top six were certainly streaky.

At this point I'd rather go after Okposo than Boedker.

It doesnt have to be a glowing review, it doesnt even have to be insightful, most would probably have settled for accurate.

He could have said:

"They need a goalie and a coach, a RW wouldnt hurt either."

It isnt insightful but at least he'd have gotten his facts straight.

Other than "Matt Stajan was buried in the defensive zone last season and is paid more than his role would typically warrant;"

Well yeah. He's the 4th line centre. Thats where hes going to spend most of his time. And you'd have known this if you'd bothered to pull your head out of your ass for a couple of seconds.

I don't think many would argue with that.

Agreed.

If we could come away from this summer with:

Okposo
Fleury
Paul MacLean

I'd be happy. Hey, maybe we could wrangle in Jiri Hudler for cheap on a show-me, too.

A few head scratchers in the article, but overall I don't think it is that far off. Sign the young guys, hopefully dump a few old ones. No doubt that the CP crew could write a more insightful piece, however.

Sign one of Backes or Boedker, then trade Backlund as part of a deal for a goalie or RW depending which of Backes or Boedker we land (assuming we can land either).

I would take playoff Backes in a heartbeat... Regular season Backes, not so much.

I'm sorry. But i think it is totally fair to call this guy incompetent. I could write this article for the flames and maybe upto 5 or so teams myself (as could most CPers and NHL enthusiasts), and i have another fulltime job.

If my fulltime job was to be in sports and write articles, i'd at least try to follow all teams. Hell just following the 7 canadian teams would be a no-brainer considering the viewership and audience working for a canadian broadcaster. And if time doesn't warrant that day to day, then do some home work and spend the time to review the year's major stories, starting lineups thru out the year, line combo time sheets, and then draw some conclusions prior to writing an offseason article.

Articles and sports journalists (or whatever they are called these days) that put out such elementary, and inaccurate details, are best to be ignored.

Meh. Let us fly under the radar until we become contenders. Until then, no one on the national stations will pay any kind of specific attention to the Flames or their players minus the Gaudreaus. To expect them to know these things is foolish. Articles like this are just obligatory due to the job. But there's going to be a lot of filling in the gaps because in reality only a handful of games were probably seen all year.

It'd be like asking one of the media guys over here to recap seasons of players and make educated predictions for the Carolina Hurricanes.
