Default Glenmore Construction

So I heard on the news that they were working on the Elbow St bridge on the weekend. They were saying on the news this morning that it is completed and now it is free flowing traffic on Glenmore and no lights. I drove on Glenmore this morning and there are still lights at the intersection with Elbow and it was backed up to Chinook as usual. What gives?

They now have to excavate the temporary Elbow by-pass, as well redo the off ramp to Macleod, and pave those sections before Glenmore becomes free flowing without traffic signals.

Depending on weather, probably sometime in November.

I drive that gong show every morning. All they did was re-open the right hand lane on EB Glenmore that previously ended at Elbow drive, which had been closed the last few weeks. Nothing major at all, and I have NO IDEA WTF Bronconnier was doing holding a press conference about it last week.

Elbow drive traffic is now using the overpass as well, but they still have to dig out the road under it for N/S Glenmore traffic. There are still traffic lights in all 4 directions.....so it's not even close to free flowing.

According to the City's website we should be into stage 2 right now.

Could be that Global was wrong this morning.

Yeah I drive this thing every morning as well (though some days I go through DOWN TOWN because it can be faster). A bit faster than normal this morning, but like Tron_fdc said they're using the new bridge for Elbow, but westbound still has the lights.

I gotta say after being away for four years that it's great to see the improvements. The trip on Crowchild once you are past McMahon to the outskirts is sooo much faster. Elbow once fixed will be awesome. Now if they could just add four more lanes to Deerfoot and fix Crowchild from the river up to McMahon and finish Stoney Trail and expand the LRT and LOL on and on and on. BUT at least there is progress.

Good luck with that one.

Macleod was a mess Saturday though. Going from Heninger Toyota to the Futureshop took me damn near 25 minutes.

That's actually in the long term plan for Deerfoot, IIRC.

Crowchild from Kensington to 24th Ave will never be improved, due to the powerful people that live around there.

? The houses around there aren't that nice really.. (I mean some of them in the one corner of west hillhurst aren't bad) but other than those 2 or 3 houses, it's mostly ww1/ww2 houses.

Why would they put Deerfoot at 4 lanes when the Ringroad is "supposed" to be done within the next 5 years?

*** "Supposed" is in quotes because they could delay it longer but I believe they wanted it all driveable within 5 years.***

Tell that to the vocal group of homeowners there. Not to mention land values there are incredibly high.

People still need to go north/south without having to go 20 km to the ring road...

There should be 3 main streets going north / south through town that are "freeways".
Deerfoot (already exists)
Macloed Trail (this would take a very very long time to convert).
Crowchild (is a freeway north of University).

East / West should be Glenmore and 16th Ave NE.
Add along with those the ring road and traffic would flow alot nicer.

This also means they would have to re-evaluate other intersections in town.
Increasing flow in other areas only to be blocked by mis-placed traffic lights will only increase problems, and not solve them.

Can someone fill me in or direct me to more info on this 'ring road'? I've never heard of it. Thanks.

14th St would've been one as well, you can thank Rod Sykes for that not happening.

I suppose 84/85st could be turned into something useful on the east side of town. There's nothing on the west side of town that goes through the whole city.

Country Hills Blvd and 22X are the other two E/W routes in Calgary. Glenmore and 16th Ave are of little use to suburbanites.

What always cracks me up is when the city builds new roads knowing full well that it should be 4 lanes (2 either way..) They make it 2 lanes.

Then, once they figure out traffic is so bad, they go back, make 10x the trouble, rip out the road and build a new 4 lane one.

Is it me, and assuming money is the reason they can't do it all, but wouldn't it be much cheaper to just do it then, rather than spend all this money on expansions and demolitions just to do what they could have done earlier? ... thats a run-on sentence... but you know what i mean.

Example:

Bow Trail between Old Banff Coach Road and 85th street in the SW.

... They have as much room in the world, yet they make it 2 lanes knowing full well they are going to have to go back and widen it.

I might be completely wrong but I'm pretty sure money is usually the reason that the city doesn't install 4 lanes right away. And it's always easier to go in and add lanes then it is to spend the money and have to remove lanes because they made a mistake in growth.

For some minor information on the Ring Road there's the City of Calgary website here.

Have you actually driven through there lately? People are tearing down those WW2 era houses and building crazy nice houses there. Bring a cheque book, most non in-fill type houses are going for about $1.2 million there. And there's a lot of em. Have a look at MLS. Rivals Elbow Park in some areas.

The City was incredibly shortsighted when they rebuilt the bridge on Crowchild (between McMahon and 5th Ave NW) about 7 years ago. They were redoing the bridge deck anyways, why not expand it to 6 lanes, instead of redoing it for 4? Idiots.
