What Are Your Picks For 5 Major Offseason Move By Flames
Pretty clear Flames have some big decisions this off season. I have grouped into 5 categories. Time to go on the limb and state who each will be before it all happens...
Head coach: who will motivate this team and also help develop these raw talents
6th overall selection: need another key to add to core, we likely wont draft this high again this decade.
UFA/RFA number 1 goalie: essential to be playoff contender now.
Biggest trade of roster player: Players on farm becoming waiver eligible this year so need to make some room by moving at least one current roster player.
Buyout: yes/no and if yes who? Might create some breathing room this year for salary cap since close to ceiling.
Here are my choices:
HC: Dale Hawerchuk
6th overall: Alexander Nylander
starting goalie: James Reimer
biggest roster player trade: Dennis Wideman
buyout: yes, Mason Raymond

The biggest , by far, move for the Flames is signing Gaudreau and Monahan.
With Hamiltion Gio Brodie and Frolik already signed to long term deals all till at least 2019-20 total cap hit is 21.45
If the Flames sign Gaudreau to 7x6 and Monahan to 6x6 there will be 34.45M / yr committed
The Flames management have come out and said that they are not satisfied with team performance with the firing of Hartley just 1 year into his new contract.
There would be a huge chance that the Flames will be playing a significantly different system.
Of the core only Hamilton and Frolik and Gio have played under a non-Hartley system. I expect Hamilton to improve with a more traditional system without so many options and responsibilities for the Defensemen.. Frolik is what Frolik is... an honest 2nd / 3rd line player .
Gio and Brodie and Monahan and Gaudreau have all played at high level under the Hartley system.
Gio in fact was an average defenseman in the prime years of his career 24-28 and only elevated his game after Hartley became coach... Hard to recall but one of the major reasons (excuses) for keeping Bouwmeester as a Flame was that the Flames had no one who could play big minutes.... Gio was slotted in as a 3/4 career d-man.
Monahan and Gaudreau and Brodie have had no other coach and system other than Hartley Brodie had 57 NHL games @16:00 /gm and 14 pts under Sutter.
So do the Flames commit 34.45 M long term to 6 six skaters who all are coming off of great personal seasons on a bad team?
They have the option of doing bridge contracts like Huberdeau 2 years 6.5M or Lindholm 2 years @5.4.
34.45M to 6 skaters would put the Flames in 4th place in committed Cap for 2019-20
Chicago 7 skaters 46.3
LA 7 skaters 37.2
Pitts 5 skaters 36.3
Flames 6 skaters 34.45

If agreeable.
Biggest trade of roster player(s): determined by highest annual salary(s) traded away. If salary retained than deducted.

Not much controversy on signing both long term. Bridging too risky and probably not much cheaper, we have enough cap space right now. Tie them up long term.
Other moves far more uncertain how things play out.

Draft Pick
|
I think we're missing player acquisition here to make the picture complete.
My plan would be to go after Okposo while drafting Chychrun. That's a shortcut to become competitive asap while laying down a new foundation past Gio era.
Aside from this:
HC: Travis Green
Goalie: Reimer
Roster trade: Wideman
Buyout: none

Okposo at 6M x 4 reasonable short term would put the Flames at the 2nd highest committed salary in 2019-10 just behind Chicago.
The only big acquisition the Flames can (at least should) look at is a goalie.

That is fair, should be active NHLer for top 6 forward not to confuse anyone with goalie acquisition which is separate. Will put in Gaudreau/Monahan/Colborne contract lengths too (as per ricardodw).
My revised list:
HC: Hawerchuk
6th: Nylander
Goalie: Reimer
Roster trade: Wideman
Buyout: Raymond
RFA Contracts: Gaudreau 6, Monahan 6, Colborne 2
Major acquisition by trade for top 6 forward: None
