Thats my thought too, I think the Flames gambled, fired Hartely, but I doubt this was a Treliving's decision.

It would not make sense though. Carlyle is not the type of possession coach the Flames are reportedly looking for.

Treliving has proven to be a lot like Alex Anthopolous when he was with the Jays, he does his work quietly and there's no leaks until the move is imminent. Let's hope that's the case here because the names being leaked scare the hell outta me.

Probably because he is the obvious weak link in the Flames hockey management hierarchy. The hope is that Brian is there to talk in the media and remain silent when hockey decisions are made. I personally would be more comfortable with Harvey the Hound making a hockey decision than I would with Brian Burke, but that is just me.

If I have stepped over the line, I am sorry no disrespect intended. Hard not to be over anxious excited when you want the team to do well. I am sure the guys will do us proud!

The coach with the best fit was Boudreau

Does anyone remember the raging fear around here prior to Burke hiring Treliving? I sure do. That hire seemed to be a great surprise to all of us. I'm reserving panic for the coaching hire if it does end up assomeone like Carlyle. There is no reason to panic at the moment, other than to kill some time over the summer.

Not that Burke gets a pass for all his previous work, but why is anyone really concerned with Burke having input anyways? Every time I hear him speak he makes a lot of sense. He's a little old school, but he really knows his stuff and has a ridiculous amount of experience to guide his thought process. There are few people that I would rather have in that position than Burke.

Besides, Treliving has a lot of autonomy to make decisions and I doubt he's pulling on
Burke's coat every 2 minutes asking what he thinks. Burke also seems really busy doing a lot of different projects not related to the day to day GM affairs. I'm sure he weighs in on big decisions like firing Hartley, and I'm sure if Treliving asks his opinion on who to hire he'll give it, but there is nothing about Treliving that makes me think he's some Burke puppet.

Is Anthopolous available?

Hiring the next coach is a massive decision. Treliving wouldn't be a puppet if Burke is weighting in a great deal on this decision.

Not worried at all. If ppl like Freidman are just throwing darts out there with speculations like Glutzen then they have no idea. This is a Brad hire not a Brian.

FWIW, I never got the impression Burke had any issue with Hartley's style of play. He was even defending the Hartley systems in his post-firing interview. Firing Hartley, and hiring the next coach, is all Tre.

Speaking of Burke though, In 2007, the year they won the cup, Burke waived Travis Green who was picked up by the Leafs. So there's some history there.

I thought so too, but as fans we know very little about what is actually out there for coaching options and what makes the best fit.

Other than style of play, what I think is also important is that the new coach understands the current stage the team is at. Boudreau picking the Wild indicates to me that he wants to coach a team that can contend now, and that maybe he isn't prepared to be patient with a young, developing team. Maybe he isn't the best fit from that perspective.

Like someone else said, I think the hire will turn out to be a pleasant surprise in the same way that Burke hired Treliving. He knows how important this hire is, I'm confident he'll get it right.

The real Brian Burke no longer exists in the minds of some. He's now an out of touch old man who is completely incompetent and shouldn't be allowed anywhere near hockey ops.

Well, I think it's safe a safe assumption that Sutter won't come back to coach the Flames. With his comments that he wants to wait how the Kings do in FA and wants to win another cup, the Flames are a much longer shot than L.A so we won't make his short list.

With Boudreau out, Maybe they wait for the playoffs to end. Get a chance to chat up Muller or others.

I figure Treliving to be very smart, from a practical standpoint. He's good at analyzing situations properly and I trust him more than every gm we've had.... since I can remember. Doubtful he'll hire someone incapable of improving the team, we might not contend every year but the next coach should be expected to show visible improvement consistently.

The amount of talent on the Flames is ridiculous and imo was mishandled with Hartley, it seemed like a system of principles over practicals and resulted in stagnation.

The interesting thing is the only team that is currently looking for a coach that fits Sutter's assumed criteria is Anaheim. He woudn't even have to move his family. That would be something.

with that rivalry you think he'd do that? that would be like the flames coach winning a couple cups for you then going to coach the grease

Darryl Sutter is my first choice. He knows how to get a team to the next level. So long as he stays behind the bench.
