On the contrary, I would say he is doing it right: history shows that the Oilers are ready and willing to reward marginal college UFAs with top-line minutes and inflated contracts.

The Oilers are a great choice for these types because they know that they will get a lot of rope and that they will get overpaid. If a player isn't confident that they will have a long NHL career, the Oilers are a good place to pad their stats and their wallet. Look how they set Justin Shultz up financially for life.

It's basically exactly what was posted above, a free mid-round pick. Well under a 50% chance he ever becomes anything noteworthy, but it's just another lottery ticket and you can't have too many of those. Especially ones you didn't have to pay for.
