It makes ZERO sense to be upset when the GM talks to someone.
GM's talk to people that they know they won't hire as the head coach.
These guys are:
sources of good information
might be assistant coach candidates
might be head coach options years down the line.
TALKING to someone like Lowry or Carlyle isn't a bad thing at all.

I'm actually okay with anyone they hire as long as they fix they special teams and tighten up the defensive zone coverage. No more Hail Mary passes would be nice too!

Gary soured my on all Leaman, yes I know the spelling is different, but still it would hurt.

Haha, funny that you mention Gary, the first time I read about Leaman, first thought came to mind was Gary. I thought to myself, since when did Gary became coach? And why are people so high on him? Then I realized wrong Leaman.

Well, if we are not getting Boudreau because of some BS like grandkids, I have my heart set on Keenan.

After seeing Greg Gilbert totally bomb and go through other successful junior coaches that couldn't translate to the pros like Don Hay I would much rather go with an experienced and proven NHL head coach as it's no fun watching your favorite team crash and burn around a head coach that is in over his head. If Treliving absolutely has to have a young guy I would at least hope it's a guy like Travis Green that has success coaching professional players. The junior to pro jump is too much for the majority of coaches in their first NHL stop. If a guy like Dave Lowry ever turns into a good NHL head coach the chances are it would be in his second NHL head coaching job not his first. I don't want the Flames to be the place for these guys to test the waters.

Agreed - let's not go into Oilers mode and start an old boys club where former Flames like Lowry, Gelinas, and more can learn the ropes.

Maybe Sutter wants to come home?
https://ca.sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nh...194226281.html

Los Angeles Kings general manager Dean Lombardi said there is an “offer on the table” to coach Darryl Sutter to return to the team next year.
According to Lombardi, who spoke publicly with reporters for the first time since LA was ousted from the postseason two weeks ago, money isn’t an issue with the deal, but it’s more whether the Sutter wants to come back for a sixth season with the organization and try to adapt after two disappointing years.

Well, D Sutter does employ a heavy, possession style system, no?

Darryl was a great coach here, just a terrible GM.
As long as he has zero input on anything upstairs, I'd be fine with that.

Sutter, hmm. I hadn't even thought of that. Intriguing.

Be nice to Darryl. He had his share of wins - he stole Kiprusoff and he's responsible for our top pairing.
He was reasonably shrewd until the Jokinen trade - then things started to come off the rails.

I really hope it's Sutter, but I hope more that his assistant coaches come!

I wouldn't be able to help myself. I'd love it if it was Darryl.
The bonus of hiring Darryl - Eric Francis' head would blow up.

Yeah, I'm all for Sutter if it's not Boudreau. A lot of people soured on him because of his debacle as GM but he's arguably the best coach we've had in the past 15 years.

I like Hakstol as well, but he did have benefit of coaching at one of the traditional hockey schools that drew a constant stream of talent. Big advantage to work with. Leaman has taken smaller schools without a track record of attracting talent and turned them into quality programs. Quite an accomplishment in my eyes.
|
its still a huge jump from these small colleges to the NHL. Hakstol is the only coach to go directly from the NCAA to a head coaching job in the NHL since Bob Johnson...and his record smokes Leaman.
and please, spare me your patronizing "sigh"...
