Seems like we have good chance of getting a big forward.

2016 NHL Draft
To be fair, Nylander is not much smaller than Tkachuk.

Nylander is the same size as Wayne Gretzky.

Well to be fair I don't think EDM or VAN is taking Nylander. I think Chiarelli is trying to get bigger and stronger just like we are. Nylander is one of the few players that Benning hasn't really blabbed about.
My informed EDM friend thinks they would and should go Tkachuk if they don't trade the pick. What's interesting to watch here is if they can acquire a d-man before the draft starts. Sounds like most EDM fans think they should be trading for a d-man and then drafting a poweforward. I don't disagree with that approach if Chia can make it happen. My friend thinks they would be willing to overpay to get the right defenseman.
VAN is hard to read. Sounds like it's down to Tkachuk, Dubois and two defensemen at their pick. Based on all the Benning interviews I've heard I think Tkachuk might be ranked #4 by them and then if he's gone they'd lean towards a d-man. Just a guess though.

McKenzie just sent out a series of tweets about the idea of moving to a 19 year old draft gaining traction. What do the draft wonks here think of that?

Better for the league overall, sucks for the team that wins a top pick in the transition year. More mature human beings make better professionals. But man, I just remember when the Raptors missed out on Kevin Durant because of that transition year.

Would take 2-3 years to implement that but I'd be ok with it. Would mean CHLers would only have to have spend 1 year in the CHL maximum post their draft year (would also mean CHL teams would get the top prospects for their 18th birthday as well). Teams would get a more known prospect. I'd be all for it.

Wouldn't this encourage tanking even more? The draft would be less of a crapshoot so those early picks will be even more valuable
I like it the way it is.

I don't like the idea of a 19 year old draft, it will hurt the NHL by preventing top young players from playing in the NHL and I don't think it benefits the CHL much either. A lot of 18 year old future superstars will do what Matthews did and go play in Europe where leagues are sensible enough to allow younger players to play if they are ready.

I disagree. How many of them want to risk an injury by playing against men without having their NHL future secured? I think Matthews was a one time thing imo.

Highly touted young European players play in men leagues all the time. They don't seem too concerned about it. Plus with the big ice service and lack of physical play in the Euro leagues the risk of injury might be less than the CHL.

Selfishly, I think it's cool to see the odd 18 year old making an impact in the NHL. Having very young players is one thing that sets the NHL apart from other team sports. The league has had these young players in the NHL for so long that it would be kind of sad to see it change.
It's cool to look into the history books and see the young stars who broke into the league at such a young age.
19 year olds would still be young and interesting, but it just wouldn't be the same.

I think draft picks will become quite a bit more valuable because teams get a better read on what the prospects could become.
Not sure if I like the idea though. I like watching the rare 18 year old in the NHL every season. It's so rare though outside of the first few picks that I'm not sure why this is even a concern for the NHL

How many make the NHL straight out of the draft at 18? How many are ready at 18? 2-3 on average? Is moving the draft eligibility by a year going to make a massive difference?
Maybe a rule could be implemented where by the most outstanding 18 year olds can apply for early draft eligibility at 18, just like the CHL did with Tavares, Ekblad, McDavid and Day. That would allow the NHL to apply some common sense and let the truly outstanding prospects enter the league early.

1sts and 2nds for sure. Later picks would lose significant value IMO.

I like him but too much. I've seen too many goalies get hot for a month in April or May then turn out to be average.

But this guy hasn't been sub 93% at any level since he was in the OHL. Even there he was 92%+. In his last 96 games (AHL and NHL), he's at around 93.5%. He's been "hot" consistently for years now.
If Dubois and Tkachuk were both gone at 6, I'd heavily consider it. But I might be out to lunch as well.
