So, who was the idiot behind all this? I am guessing the owner's kid just finished his B.Comm. and thought this was a brilliant idea because all his progressive friends were in favour. Presumably, unless the owner is a PETA lunatic, companies do things because it will make them money, so either the Kansas beef was cheaper or they thought the marketing bonanza would lead to more revenues...

I have to think it was the latter; that the "humane" aspect would speak to consumers overall, even if it meant a drop in sales in AB. To be fair to the B.Comms (Finance, 1990), has it been proven that this strategy hasn't worked?

Would not be shocked if this was a stunt the entire time.

A cheap way of advertising and it makes people hate you for one week then you make thousands if not millions of people know you serve Canadian need when I bet 99% had no clue before that.

Either way this will be a good thing for business.

Good for business for Earls or in general for the province?

I hadn't been to Earls for a while and until last week I was thinking that maybe it is time to go and check it out again. I won't even bother, even if they are reversing their decision.

I firmly believe this was their plan all along. With a handful of tweets they have been able to buy an incredible amount of advertising. Now people such as yourself are going to visit there when you may not have before.

What's the quote, "never assume malice when stupidity will suffice"? Except change malice to 'cunning'.

Thing that makes me the most upset through all of this is learning they don't have their pizza's anymore

I too find it hard to take Earl's comments at face value. I'm almost certain they had planned to hire Bruce Boudreau all along.

I don't believe that for a second. Lots of people in my office have said today they will never go back there even after this announcement. Earls management simply miscalculated how devoted Albertans are to their own.

Exactly. Earls was literally not in my mind whenever I thought about which restaurant to eat at.

Now they are simply because of this incident. It's great advertising.

Yeah, no. No company considers deliberately angering their customer base to be a cunning PR move.

If they get anybenefits out of this I doubt it won't be strong marketing it will be simple puck luck. Planning something like that would have huge risk and questionable reward.

Anyone who thinks this was part of their strategy is overestimating the long-term vision of the typical person who works in Marketing.

Especially since the new meat was tastier. Now they're going back to (presumably) lower quality meat just because of this pressure.

The new meat was probably tastier as a result of your bias. How often did you eat steak at Earl's to be able to make an accurate grading of the meat quality and not just gauge the results of the guy who happened to prepare it that day.

I'm very familiar with their old product, I spent a decade in this industry. I also prefer corn fed beef to grass fed so it could also be as simple as that.

If you don't want to take my word for it, try one yourself before they're gone, apparentely all steak sales today are getting donated to Fort Mac releif
