That's the least of the worries I'm sure. Whole of downtown looks in jeopardy.

Oh man that looks really bad. Hope everyone gets out safe.
And I hope everyone that suffers a loss of homes and belongings has insurance.

I have a friend who's a firefighter in Slave Lake. They have three trucks on the way to help. He hasn't left but is prepared to go if needed.

My cousin lives there. She's saying her area, Timberlea, is ok. Still prepped just in case.
Edit: Right, scratch that

Municipality declares mandatory evacuation for all of Fort McMurray. That includes Timberlea neighbourhood. Tell her to leave now.

That is over 125,000 people, btw. Surpassing the 2013 flood for the largest evacuation in Alberta's history.

Yeah, I am not sure I'd consider Timberlea far enough away to be safe. The air quality alone would have me consider leaving.

Trying not to be rude, but this isn't up for debate - Ordered to leave, so leave.

I don't want to leave my computer out of fear that when I come back all of Mac will be gone... but I'm done with updates for a bit.
#1 thing right now - no reports of injuries.

Never been up there...are the mine sites in danger of being hit? Is that the type of thing that once on fire, would burn underground for years like the coal seam fires?

Suncor and Syncrude aren't near the fire, so they are safe.
Plants can be safely idled and I'd imagine they are partially implementing their ERPs already in terms of process safety. Just in case.

The mines are north. Suncor is the closest one which is about 45 minutes north of the city.

My brother is on the highway heading out of town but hasn't moved an inch in half an hour. He's contemplating ditching the car and walking to his friends house in town. He's obviously frustrated but if people start doing that traffic really won't move

Plenty of operations south of the city now too, but all seem safe. Seeing pictures of families, pets at CNRL Horizon camp, crazy.
