For some reason I was under the impression that all Alberta beef was already raised this way by law (not necessarily the humane way, but without antibiotics etc...)
Is that just for dairy cows? Or am I flat wrong?

Price.
I'll usually go for the Idaho grass fed over the Japan Wagyu.

Chains like this though, they usually just say USDA Choice beef, or the Canadian equivalent, I forget what that is.

Triple AAA alberta beef if it's good.

It is, without knowing the details, this designation goes a little bit further. In AB I think you can't have growth hormones in feed etc nut this goes further, I believe, to saying you can't even give the animals antibiotics if it's sick

Well, I would find it very odd if any high-end place in Alberta had not-from-Alberta steaks, given that this is the home of the beef industry. Unless you are specifically looking for a wagu steak or something.

People still go to steak houses for steak? Why not buy a premium steak and get your pet chimpanzee to grill it for you at around 1/4 the price?
What is this? 1972?

Actually its quite good. I think the whole appeal of it is to get something a little bit different.
Obviously you can get Alberta Beef pretty much anywhere.

peter, we agree!
I've eaten at some pretty high end places, but have never had a steak that I didn't think I could do as well, or better, myself.
I hardly ever get steak at a restaurant. So overpriced for something so easy. If I'm out for food, I'm getting something I can't make myself.
Although I am a little surprised Ruth's Chris isn't your daily lunch spot..

Is there a Halal steakhouse around town? Does that qualify as Certified Humane beef?

"It has to be slaughtered while you whisper sweet nothings in its ear and then singing Happy Birthday so it doesnt know whats coming."
Yes...but it still gets slaughtered. The end result remains the same, which really seems like the important part of the discussion.
I sincerely doubt the Cow is in Bovine Heaven glaring down disapprovingly about how we tricked it with the candles and balloons and the Happy Birthday song only to wind up giving it a pneumatic piston to the brainpan.

When I eat out, I tend to eat out like a pauper - Asian noodles, and Mexican are my favourites. I like to cook a lot at home, and I am more attracted to exotic dishes, but I also know how to nail down a classic.
Why would I pay $38 for a single serving of lamb when I can make an absolutely perfect leg of lamb for around $70 that will serve 10 people twice?

Carcasses are always bled out during the slaughtering process.

Yeah but they normally shoot a bolt into the cows head that stuns it. Halal, they just slit it's throat.
