Can't recall whether this has already been brought up in this thread but an E-W alignment for the football stadium will create some problems with the sun when game times run through sunset. Don't most stadiums have a N-S alignment for this very reason?

The sun will be entering its much dimmer "red giant" phase by the time the stadium opens.

Yes, most outdoor stadiums have a N-S alignment for this reason (Ottawa is the only outdoor CFL stadium with an E-W alignment). Since the CalgaryNext design will be a covered stadium, the orientation of the field doesn't matter.

But I wasn't certain if the roof was going to be translucent or not.

No, that was just for the presentation.

I suspect there would be lower boxes as well - that drawing just isn't fine tuned enough.

Ya you're probably right. I have to remember not to take too much out of renderings. But as it's shown, it looks like a mini Lambeau field set-up for NHL.

I just can't see them foregoing box revenues - the trend was for more boxes IIRC. But maybe I'm wrong and their cost-benefit analysis gives them a bigger bang with more quality "non-box" seats.

I assumed that white strip in the middle of what looks like a power ring separating a 1st and 2nd bowl was boxes.
Then again, I probably wouldn't read into random early stage renderings as any sign or indication of arena capacity, the location of or # of boxes.

I wouldn't read much into interior design beyond rough orientation, and roughly x number of seats.
How long would it take to convert from seating to fieldhouse? The financing plan needs to build in ~$5M in contingency for inevitable repairs to this nearly unprecedented retractable seating set up (anyone have examples of 10k+ retractable seats out there?).
It would be nice if it was as easy as a Jack Simpson's bleachers on steroids, but we're talking 10x the size here.
IF they want this to be a public fieldhouse, I'd like to see airport style drop-off/pick up through roads, not just service roads only. It would be great for taxi and bus/shuttle efficiency after games too.

Here's what's so frustrating about this project. You have ken King coming out and making a comment that sounds like the Stamps aspect is throwaway "Oh yeah, CFL attendance is trending downwards so that's why 25k seats is okay", then they show a rendering that makes the stadium look like a second rate gym type thing with some seats jammed in on once side.
Lots of the negative reaction is attributed to these exact factors of the presentation. Then this gets added to their page and all of a sudden the whole project looks more professional and better suited to what the franchises require.
I mean you've got a nice two tiered football stadium with seats on the ends for 30,500 seats (right in the wheelhouse of what many said would be acceptable capacity) AND another configuration actually seats over 40k?
Like c'mon, how was this not part of the initial release, how do you get the capacity completely wrong in your presentation, COMPLETE with an explanation as to why it's lower?

Doesn't this look like there's a practice rink build into this thing too?

King always said the football stadium it would seat in the range of 30k with expanded capacity available.

The translucent roof is a "nice to have" in King's words which means it's not a deal breaker.

I'll try and find it but I could have swore he specifically mentioned 25k at the initial revealing and specifically mentioned declining CFL attendance as why they could do that.

Not that I heard. He always advertised it as just over 30k to my knowledge as on the Stamps forum the lower capacity from 34k (McMahon) was discussed.

Yeah, he said 30,000 expandable to 50,000 for Grey Cup games and other major events.

Ha. Same here a bit. Though what they did was make me think really hard about the dual facility. Would I actually like that as a fan/guest? I don't think so, or at least I'd like it less. Surely it would be more enjoyable to attend Stamps and Flames games at dedicated facilities.
Still against the West Village though. No rendering could change that.

After seeing those renderings, I don't hate this project... Not a fan of the location or price tag, but I like the facility
