I've got the Ergon GS1. I still get some pain on long descents, but more on the gripping area of my hand between thumb and finger. I think they are a big help overall though. Cons on the bullhorns would be snagging branches/trees on narrow trails. I've bounced my handles off trees lots, with the bullhorn you might get caught up. That, and I couldn't ever see using them. Used to have bar ends like everyone in the 90's. Don't miss em.

^ bar ends/bull horns are a nice feature on a commuter bike as it gives you an alternative hand position.

Some cyclists are just f'ing idiots. Coming down 10th St hill, making a right on to 5th. The dedicated bike lane ends and transitions into a right turn lane. I'm the 2nd car waiting to turn right due to pedestrians. 2 bikes whizz past me and the car in front ON THE RIGHT, one of the riders turns and glares at the car in front of me because he has his nose right to the crosswalk. Maybe I should be posting this in the GMG thread.

Frustrating, what are the groups thoughts on people passing without so much as a "on your left" or bell ring? It's been happening to me pretty much everyday, sometimes you can hear them approaching behind you but most of the time not.

Now I don't want to be that guy, but every single one of them fits the "pathlete" look.

my thought is that you should give a warning before passing.

I am hesitant sometimes to give either if the people I am passing are all over the pathway like they own the darn thing - to me those folks should get nothing but a surprise.

the other folks that annoy me are the ones that are walking their dog with those long retracable leashes. if your dog wanders out in front of a cyclist, it could really hurt your precious dog

I like the guy who "rides" his e bike at 50 or 60 on the path without so much as a word as he whizzes past. If your bike is powerful enough that you have to wear a full face helmet, maybe you need to switch to the road.

I do the three bell thing. After three, I just ride through their non-caring asses.

If I ride the road bike, I use my voice. If it's the cross bike, I ring the bell. No excuse for not announcing your approach.

The worst are the people who, after you ring your bell get all uppity like you have ruined their day. Sorry, but it's the bylaw. I'm gonna ring.

There are definitely people you can't win with. They'd be pissed if you passed them silently as well. #### the trail nazis.

Or the people along 5th St SW (west side of Chinook mall) who insist on driving on the road when the bike path is right next to the street. Then drive along the centre of the lane but when they come to a light they head off to the side and slip past all the vehicles so they can get in front again (and hold everyone up again once it turns green).

Wait, there's a by-law? Crap. I've got a bell on my cross bike because I use it to commute, but the new one doesn't, partly because I just don't want to put one on there.

Those guys should have waited in traffic, like yourself, for their turn and did it properly. At that point they are not following the traffic rules. It can be frustrating but a lot of us follow the rules.

A bell is not a requirement however you are required to announce your presence
by either a bell or an "on your left" voice call.

It actually doesn't say "yell" on the page (edit: it does in the by-law now that I look at it), but yeah I just "on your left".

I mean, I'm constantly breaking that by-law in that 20kph is an absolutely ridiculous speed limit to ask cyclists to maintain, so I guess in that sense, who gives a damn.

I think an issue there is the city should have better signage indicating it is a shared space. It goes form a dedicated bike lane to shared, with only badly faded pavement markings. IMO, the dashed line for the bike lane should angle out to the curb to show it has ended and a sign should exist indicating it. You can 311 it, but the roads dept. is notoriously bad at resisting to change.

^ huh, good call. So the cyclists were probably thinking we were in their segregated bike lane? Which would explain the indignant attitude. But still, there has to be some common sense. You simply don't go to the right of a car with a turning blinker on. Several years ago, I had a situation downtown were my new car got hit by a bike in a similar situation. The guy rode off, but I was ready to use my snowbrush to push his chamois up to his esophagus.

I think that's entirely possible. You come down the hill pretty quick, and in most cases the bike lane is maintained, and a dashed entry is allowed for vehicles to turn, but it is up to the vehicle to make sure it is safe to enter the bike lane. The cyclist should have signaled and moved into the left lane though, but often these things happen pretty quick, cars don't signal etc and you can get yourself trapped. Tough to say without seeing it go down, but a lot of times I think it is bad design as much as bad attitudes that cause issues.

I was driving east on 12th and turned left to go to the Bike Shop, twice in a couple weeks and crossed the bike lane. Both times it was empty, but I found myself wondering how easily it would have been for me to smoke someone making that turn, after I had made it.

I didn't know cheating was so sophisticated these days, crazy. I also didn't know they scan bikes for these sorts of things either. Why do cyclists keep on cheating? As a professional athlete, what is the glory in that?
