Its only EDTV, I wouldn't personally waste my money on a EDTV. If you are going to buy something new, make sure its a true HDTV.

HDTV is definitely the way to go. If you like watching movies or have a satellite/digital cable the HD programs (mostly sports) are amazing. Your also get sports in surround sound (5.1) which is really nice.

Wow... I almost got suckered into this the other day too. But I too was frightened off by the EDTV...
Which reminds me... EdTV was a great movie.

We debated the pros and cons of EDTV a couple of weeks ago:

A bit long but worth the read if you are looking at buying.

Hey DR,
Here is my advice. Go to any Visions store, take a peek at their Samsung HPS-4233 model (here is a link to the specs from BestBuy). They probably have it listed at 2399. However, they do GUARANTEE that they will beat ANY competitors price. It just so happens that Soundsaround has this exact model listed at 1898. So with the price match that Visions GUARANTEES you, you can get them down to 1803.
One other thing (be sure to mention this after they have price matched you), they are also running a promo right now where if you sign up for a Bell ExpressVu High Definition package, you will get an additional 200$ off the price of any HDTV (the 4233 is an HDTV). So, if you play your cards right, you can actually get the HDTV version of the model you mentioned above for 1603 + tax, only a 100 bucks more then the EDTV model that FS has listed.
Trust me, the 4233 is a sweet deal. It isn't the nice glossy, piano-black finish of the other Samsung models, but the PQ it very, very nice.
Give it a shot anyways, what do you have to lose?
cheers,
Graeme

I would rather buy one from a guy on Main and Hastings before I buy from Future Shop. I would check out Costco

I found a Samsung Plasma HPS4253 at Visions ... best price they would give me is $2160. Is this same model and is that a decent deal?

Not the same model. What I could find out, the 4253 has cable card. this is not used in Canada, so you may be paying extra for no reason. I'd choose the 4233. Try going to the Samsung site to check out the differences.

i heard the Plasma has troubles in a well lit room and the 4253 has an anti glare film, whereas the 4233 doesnt.
i dunno, so many factors, i dont understand ratio's and those other technical details, the stuff that makes sense to me is the practical issues, like being able to see the TV!
