Default Ottawa announces sweeping Canadian Content review - "Everything’s on the table"

This has overlap with entertainment, politics, and tech, so I'm posting it in the main OT forum. Move if you see fit to do so, mods.

This will be a pork barrel to the CBC.

At first glance I thought this was about a comic book convention.

I agree with Canadian Content requirements, but I think they needs to be looser in some ways and stronger in others.

If we mandate X% of songs on the radio must be Canadian content, there needs to be a mechanism in place to ensure that the radio stations aren't playing Nickleback every hour on the hour. That defeats the purpose of exposing and helping the Andrew Waite & The Firm's or Lady Brett Ashley's of the world.

I don't have a perfect system, but I think putting it all out on the table is excellent.

This is about as relevant as Canadian content in messenger pigeons, if there's any radio left in a decade it'll be a miracle.

It would be great if canadian rock stations didn't have to play Ocean Pearl once a day, but the cynic in me is sure that that slot would get filled by some overrated crap from ACDC or U2 or Rolling Stones.

This will be aimed at netflix, music streaming etc.

In the end you know it'll mean Canadians pay more. Though I'm sure there will be some killer Rita McNeil added to streaming services.

Edited the title to remove ambiguity.

All about extracting more money from our pockets and more regulations. Canadian content should live and die on its merits, not on being forced onto people who don't want it. No point in creating something better if you know the governemnt will protect you and give you an artificial advantage

Call me naive, but I truly don't believe our Canadian Content Laws are about allowing corporations and government to take more money from us. Even if the laws are potentially misguided.

Also, a review of a 10 year old process is a good thing.

I have no issue with it being reviewed. I am however concerned that things like Spotify and Netflix, which are already limited here, get completely neutered.

Might be naive but I can't see them touching Netflix or Spotify... once people feel entitled to access to something removing it causes a lot of hard feelings and ultimately politicians are pulling the strings.

I think where there is a huge need for Canadian content is in journalism/news reporting. The national newspaper chains have almost no investigative journalists anymore with all their cutbacks and it's basically only the CBC that's doing anything beyond the high profile politics and criminal cases these days.

Leave entertainment programming alone but if they could somehow enhance news and journalism, I think that is something that can never be provided externally and is a huge need in canada.

Ultimately I hopethe Libs will move towards embedding long term protection of the CBC and maybe subsidize more Canadian news coverage. Producing Canadian dramas, etc, is something they shouldn't get involved in.

I don't think it'll be a miracle. It's survived for over a century, and it's so ingrained into our everyday lives. Especially on the Deerfoot, it's so much more convenient for people to just press a couple buttons inside their cars to turn on Lite 96 instead of plugging their phones into the AUX and unlocking them, choosing a song, etc.

If whatever changes happen mean Brent Butt doesn't get to make any more television shows, I'm okay with that.

what form of ancient tech are you using? Bluetooth auto connects my phone, when I don't feel like listening to satellite radio.

I haven't heard normal radio for at least 6 years now

Maybe I'm just cheap (and live in the GTA where is a plethora of radio stations), but I'd rather have the variety and cost of radio rather than the cost of satellite radio or the limited selections of paid for songs.

I prefer listening to music I actually like than stations that are 80-90% crap with occasional songs I like

I'm a foster parent, I haven't had a kid listen to the radio in a decade, their whole lives are played out on line, as car companies and bandwidth providers get the price down and a net feed everywhere radio will die except for the few specialty channels, ethnic or sports.

It will take time but the end is as inevitable as the death of video stores and classified ads in papers.

They can force Canadian content in to Netflix, but they can't force me to watch it.

They might not be able to force you to watch, but I imagine they will tax you $2.00-$5.00 per month and direct it right into Canadian filmmakers pockets and force their garbage to be featured across all of Netflix's search screens. This is nothing good for the consumer.
