Default Canadian Soldier Killed

Sounds like he may have stepped on a landmine recently placed.

Canada has now lost 37 members.

R.I.P.

I really don't think we are fighting a winnable war over there.

I suppose the alternative is to simply abandon Afghanistan and leave a power vaccuum in our place.

Cause that turned out real well in the 1980s.

That is to some extent what the U.S. has done, isn't it? Leaving a skeleton crew to man the ropes while the bulk of their armed forces is committed in Iraq?

Either way, either it's a conflict worth fighting, in which case 37 lives is a price worth paying, or it's a pointless conflict, in which case one death is too many. In that sense, this news is unlikely to change anyone's opinion.

... And which probably shouldn't be discussed on a thread in memorial of his death?

The US did somewhat, but it was always a NATO mission.

IMO, it is as appropriate a place as any. The merits of what this soldier died for are extremely relevent.

IIRC NATO just took over the Americans (20,000+ soldiers).

But it was a NATO sanctioned mission from the get-go, wasn't it?

Well, I don't think that we are fighting a very winnable war over there, but we are in way too deep to just leave at this point.

Once its down graded from a war to a peacekeeping mission, we'll still be there for 10 years.

It is scary to hear about a Canadian being killed in Afghanistan. My neighbour's son is stationed in Afghanistan and I always feel for my neighbours. The constant worry and concern that they go through knowing that danger that their son is in, and the momentary panic they must feel when they hear about another Canadian soldier being killed in Afghanistan.
