Hits and PIMs? That's it? 
That's just a small slice of info that answers the question of if a player is soft. 
I agree with Bingo that it is not something that is easily measurable by stats. 
Here's what I do see with the player 
- Plays a great 2 way game
- Often is matched up against the other teams best players
- Isn't afraid to fight for position and has a high compete level overall
- Is trusted to play in critical moments and in all situations 
Nik Lindstrom wasn't a big hitter and took very few PIMs. Was he soft?
Are the Sedins soft?

Alex Tanguay
Phil Kessel
Justin Schultz
Mike Green
Brandon Pirri
