In the words of the inimitable Jeremy Clarkson:

"Its the fastest car....the the world!"

Because its a Corolla?

"Because its a rental."

You guys do realize this is not a recent start up right? It's been in the US since 2009 and they've rebranded and are just entering the Canadian market now.

You guys better hope I don't rent one of your cars. I don't crash them, but I definitely knock a few years off the useful life.

From their website

"You’ll need to arrange to meet the traveler to check their driver’s license. You can hand over your car key at that time, or make other arrangements."

That's going to be fun and convenient. How do you leave once you've handed over your keys? Take transit? Have someone else drive a second car with you? Call a taxi? Ask them to drive you home?

Owners can choose to deliver (with or without a delivery fee) or not deliver at all and have them meet where your car is parked.

Am I the crazy one here who sees this as a good thing or is this just the CP-car-bias taking over?

Sure I wouldn't be putting my own car up unless I really wanted the extra money...but it's a really attractive option for renting, similar to hotels vs. Airbnb.

It's not a good or bad thing IMO. Just a different market people can explore if they want to rent a car cheaper, and something drivers can explore if they don't use their car much, want some extra cash, and are OK with the risk.

Decent idea as a renter, I'd like it when visiting a city, be able to rent a vehicle that might be a little more interesting than something a regular rental company would have. Just checked around some US cities, I'd totally spend $200 a day for a GTR, or $127 for a M3.

Would never do it as a owner though

I think it would be ridiculous to rent out my own car. If I was travelling, would I want to risk having to deal with this is something goes wrong? Probably not.

Most sane people aren't interested in providing the car, so you have to imagine the type of people that are crazy enough to do this. I just don't see how there is any money to be made as a guy who would provide a vehicle.

I could see why some might do it. Few days a month, bang, there's your payment. Free car. Not worth the risk in my eyes, but may appeal to some

I don't know that I could get my head around it, but if I could I would rent out my truck. There has to be money in renting out a pick-up for people to take loads to the dump or pick things up or whatever. Just not my thing though.

Yeah I agree. It's not a terrible idea in theory, but I can't imagine who would want to risk their car this way. Just too many things that could happen.

I can't see how this would be allowed on a leased or financed car.

Leased you'd likely be right, but financed? Doubt it'd be an issue. As long as they get their money, what do they care.

Agreed. Leased makes sense but financed? Its an asset-backed loan.

Yeah I dunno. You'd have to look through your loan agreement, but I'd bet there's some language that prohibits the use as a "fleet" vehicle or something like that. I dunno, pretty big grey area.

OK, so a REALLY quick check shows something like a Chevy Cruze goes for like $30 a day. They take 25% of that, so you get $22.50. Lets pretend you can get that leased for $150 a month. Plus $100 insurance. So your "costs" are, ignoring all maintenance, depreciation etc are $250 a month. You would still need to rent it out over 11 days a month just to pay for those costs. Does this in any way sound worth it?

This is what they say about leases:

Quote:
Q: Is it OK to rent out my car if I'm leasing it?

A: Most likely, although it depends on the language of your lease or financing documents. Before listing your car, you should confirm there are no restrictions that would prevent you from renting it out through a car sharing marketplace.
