But then you flip it on its head and say that Tarasenko isn't anywhere near the playmaker that Gaudreau is. So you could argue that they balance themselves out.

Treleving will just show him the thread explaining Brodie's value to the team relative to Johnny's. Once that settles in, and he inks the same deal as Brodie (maybe 0.4-0.5m AAV added, you know, to stretch it to 8 years), I can't see the team having any issues convincing Monahan to commit to a number very close, but slightly lower, so they can stay together. Likely in the 4.28AAV range.

I'll have what you're smoking and we better give that same stuff to Gaudreau and Monahan if we want them to sign at that price.

Wow this has to be one of the worst posts of the year. Congrats.

I seriously doubt that. He is one of the Flames' best players, one of their most poplar players, and a top ten scorer in the NHL in his second year.
This will be a long-term deal: they know it and want it that way.

Exactly. I was expecting the dreaded sophomore slump with Johnny this year. The fact he was better and finished as a top ten scorer is impressive. Every team in the league focuses on gaudreau when they play us!
Not sure why that other poster thinks gaudreau isn't as good as the numbers say he is

I am sure the Blackhawks felt the same way about Patrick Kane as well.

Gaudreau has already answered anyone who would ever doubt him for his size:

I guess i've just never seen the Flames really open the bank for potential stardom. Historically they pay for established success ... most recently see Giordano. Its all about money and it is a negotiation after all ... the Flames will have started low.

Phaneuf? 6.5 million a decade ago? I think they can afford to pay Monahan that much and Johnny more.
Lets just admit it, that post was horrible.

A post that goes against the grain is not horrible, but rather enhances forum debate.
Anyways, so far we have two signings for potential stardom that either played out really badly (Phaneuf) or don't look too great so far (Hamilton). You can be sure Murray Edwards is reminding Treliving of this when it comes to Johnny and Sean, as well as the fact there is only so many long term max contracts the Flames can take on. Its not all popcorn and lollypops when it comes to business in the NHL.

There are posts that go against the grain and actually enhance forum debate, then there are obvious trolling posts that simply stupefy the rest of the board.

I would argue that Dougies contract A) is just fine value wise right now. 22nd in defensman points, 15th highest paid dmen (tied with a few guys and <1m more than a lot of worse players). And B) is not for an elite player. Elite Dmen are making 7+, and those are on old contracts. Going forward it's going to be 8+.
I think every GM in the league would take Dougie at his contract.

Hamilton's contract wasn't supposed to look good this year. It's supposed to look good 2 years from now, and hopefully a steal beyond that.
