This time in the South, right in my neck of the woods, about 100kms south of where I am to be more exact.
2 big quakes, the first on Thursday evening which was magnitude 6 (considered a 'big one') followed by another even bigger one Saturday early morning (around 1:30am) which had a magnitude of over 7; a number that has not been seen since the Tohoku quake/tsunami of 2011. In between the two big quakes and since the last one a series of almost constant aftershocks.
The odd thing about this one is the location. Kyushu is not as 'well known' for disastrous quakes like the Kansai or Tohoku regions of Honshu. The other oddity is two massive quakes on 2 consecutive nights.
The two quakes were level 4 and 5 here in Fukuoka respectively. Only casualties in my place were glasses, plates and picture frames smashed on the floor. What has been more surreal in my opinion have been the aftershocks; it literally felt all day Saturday like our building would not stop shaking, often subtle but moving none the less (like we were floating on calm water).
37 confirmed dead, over 1000 injured and over 90,000 under evacuation.
Kumamoto Castle severely damaged. Landslides have cause roads and railroads to be impassable.
