Shink isn't a #1 line player, but he didn't look out of place and showed he has some finishing ability. So if he can be a stop gap for the time being then that's fine with me. Until then all we need is someone that can keep up with the big guns who is able to bang in some rebounds.

Flames I expect will try to trade for a goalie (i.e. Ben Bishop or Frederik Andersen)

I dunno. Toronto for mid round picks. Say a 3rd in 2016 and a 4th in 2017. Something like that.

They have a young defense, could use a veteran top 4 D man. Especially a RHD. They aren't worried about the real dollars (see: Horton, Laich, Cowen, etc) and have cap space. They may see Wideman as someone who would get loads of ice time for them, and then they could flip him to a contender next deadline if the situation calls for it at a greater return than what they spent to acquire him.

Wideman, with his NMC, could see it as an opportunity to get lots of ice time, rebound and set himself up for another NHL contract after this season. Plus the aforementioned potential flip to a contender at the deadline with a chance to win a Cup.

Pessimistic 23 man roster assuming we can't shed any of our under performers, don't win a lottery pick, and don't lure any of the top end free agents (instead having to settle for the tier two UFA's I've added):

Gaudreau (RFA) - Monahan (RFA) - Ferland
Colborne (RFA) - Backlund - Frolik
Shinkaruk - Bennett - Grabner (UFA)
Bouma - Stajan - Jooris (RFA)
x - Raymond, Bollig

Brodie - Hamilton
Giordano - Wideman
Jokipakka - Nakladal (UFA)
x - Engelland

Ward (UFA)
Ortio (RFA)

Engelland would draw in periodically when added toughness is needed for rivalry games. Grabner and Ward are added on short term, inexpensive "prove it" type contracts.

Let's go with the truculence lineup for Burke:

Gaudreau(7.5M)-Monahan(7M)-Backes(5.5M) = 20,000,000
Lucic(5M)-Bennett(925K)-Brouwer(5M) = 10,925,000
Colborne(2.5M)-Backlund(3.5)-Frolik(4.3) = 10,300,000
Hathaway(690K)-Stajan(3.3M)-Ferland(825K) = 4,815,000
Bollig - $1,250,000

Giordano(6.7M)-Brodie(4.6M) = 11,300,000
Jokipakka(900K)-Hamilton(5.7M) - 6,650,000
Wotherspoon(900K)-Nakladal(1M) 1,900,000

Reimer (4.5M)
Ortio (1M)
= 5.5M

$72,640,000
Cap Hit? $73,000,000

Treliving does his magic and trades:
- Wideman
- Engelland
- Raymond
- Bouma

LTIR: Smid (traded if possible)

Highly doubt any of this happens with our cap situation, but the possibilities...

If you want truculence then we wouldn't be dealing Engelland. He's our most truculent d-man.

If Flames don't eat any money IMO they would be taking back a pretty bad contract on a bottom 6 forward. They would probably be better off just keeping Wideman if they go this route. Flames have to many bottom 6 forwards as is and more than enough on the farm that could also take a spot.

I can't see the Flames getting that kind of return with no money retained if dealing with Toronto.

No money retained i see a trade more like Wideman ($0 retained) for Lupul ($1.5 million retained). Or maybe Wideman and Raymond for Lupul straight up.

Wideman's last year is not only a bad cap hit for a bottom pairing d-man that can play on the PP, but he is also owed more money than cap hit. I believe his real pay out is $6 million.

Honestly, if the Flames can't trade Wideman for just picks anywhere, then a trade like that sort is fine with me. Transfer his cap dollars to a position of need, either goaltending or a RW. Not really interested in Lupul though, as he's got an extra year left on his deal. I'd be fine with Wideman for Michalek though. He's a left shot, but he can play RW. He's also got good size and speed, and him being injury prone is no problem either, as all that would do is open up some more ice time for Pribyl, Shinkaruk, Poirier or (if it please the hockey gods) Laine, Puljujarvi, Dubois, etc.....

Also could be a good Czech mentor maybe for Pribyl, if the rumor of him signing with the Flames is true.

Wideman ($5,250,000 UFA) to TOR for Michalek ($4,000,000)

Raymond bought out
Smid on LTIR to start

1. Gaudreau (7.500) - Monahan (6.000) - Michalek (4.000)
2. Colborne (2.500) - Backlund (3.575) - D. Pribyl (0.925)
3. M Stajan (3.125) - S Bennett (0.925) - M Frolik (4.300)
4. L Bouma (2.200) - Hamilton (0.800) - M Ferland (0.825)

Extra - Bollig (1.250) - Hathaway (0.690)

1. Giordano (6.750) - Hamilton (5.750)
2. TJ Brodie (4.650) - Engelland (2.916)
3. Jokipakka (0.900) - Nakladal (1.000)

Extra - Wotherspoon (0.950)

1. Reimer (4.500)
2. J Ortio (0.800)

$70.5 million against the cap, including Raymond's buy out and Smid on LTIR.

Hopefully Treliving can pull off more wizardry than that, but it won't be easy with some of the contracts he has to deal with. Luckily most of those are done after next season.

This team would/should have better goaltending, more size/speed and the young core is hopefully one more year better than last season. I could see it battling for 3rd seed in the Pacific and/or a Wild Card spot. I'm sure some would disagree though.

This would be awesome, the only thing is I doubt both Backes and Lucic is possible, so what I would like for the top two lines is this:
Gaudreau - Monahan - Pribyl
Laine - Bennett - Backes

also for some reason I really want to see Bouma reconnected with Backlund, and I think a Bouma - Backlund - Frolik line would be fantastic

2009-10 starting line-up

Boyd – Jokinen-Iginla
Bourque-Langkow-Dawes
Glencross-Conroy-Moss
Nystrom- Sjostrom- Prust

Bouwmeester-Phanuef
Regehr- Gio
Sarich-Pardy

Kipper

Lot of similarities salary structure-wise in the make up of 2016-17

4 out of the top 30 paid d-men in the league

3 high paid forwards . Bourque didn’t sign his 3.3 x 6 extension until feb 2010

2-3 hopes in the top 9 Boyd Dawes and 37 year old Conroy

This line-up started the 5-year no playoff run

Do the Flames still have the same Cap manager?

^ Except 4 of your 7 highly paid in Jokinen, Iginla, Regher, Langkow were trending down. Boyd, Dawes were never highly touted outside of Flames fan base.

In today's version Gaudreau, Monahan, Bennett, Hamilton, Brodie are all trending upwards. Adding another top 5 pick this year and potentially a good UFA in his prime.

So sure, the strategy might the same (in a cap world this is the strategy Toews/Kane/Hossa/Keith/Seabrook then hopefulls in Teravainen/Paranrin etc) but the players are on different ends of the spectrum.

When did the Hawks ever have the equivalent of Bouwmeester-Phanuef-Regehr-Sarich or Gio-Hamilton-Wideman-Brodie?

As soon as Seabrook signed his 5.8 M deal Campbell was shipped to Florida.

^hmmmm Right now? Keith-Seabrook-Hjarlmarsson. Combined they will be 16 mill next year and thats due to the old CBA which allowed them to sign Keith and Hossa to million year contracts to reduce the cap hit.

Wideman is not in Flames future plans, he was a Feaster signing and nothing can be done about it. They will try to get out of that contract this off-season if not 17-18 off-season he's off the books and Gio-Brodie-Hamilton will be combined 17 mill.

In the end I'm really not even sure what your point is.
